# Crucible Year

> Peter Yuill (Canadian painter, born Ottawa 1984, based in Bangkok) is making large one-shot sumi ink paintings on Chinese paper for Crucible Year, an ongoing year-long project. The archive holds 402 registered paintings dated from 29 December 2025 to 2026.10.26, each with its paper and inks registered, measured by a purpose-built visual analysis engine, and kept in a public archive. This site also holds a practitioner's field guide to sumi ink, Xuan paper, brushwork and the reading of abstract ink painting, written from first-hand studio data.

Key facts, generated from the master database:
- 402 paintings registered; 172 shown (rated 5.0 or more on the engine's 1 to 9 scale, 5 being the median painting of the year).
- 14 papers (most handmade in Jing County, Anhui, the home of Xuan paper) and 10 black inks (China and Japan).
- V23 measures studio photographs by code and reads them five times with a vision model on five fixed ladders (Form, Tonal depth, Layering, Composition, Material and surface). Early phone photographs are read once by V23 lite, kept as a separate series. V23's rank agreement with the artist is 0.87 on ten held-out paintings and 0.81 on all 31 he rated blind or in advance, with an average miss of 0.77 of a point (engine version 23.11; a small test, one rater). Ratings are relative to this archive; differences under half a point are noise.
