The grey spiral is an ear seen too close, the whorl turning inward to the pale hollow where sound goes in. Past it the coil keeps going in the dark: the cochlea, named for a snail shell because that is the shape of it. The black hook dripping at the centre is the part of the curl you never see, where the noise of the world gets wound down small enough to fit. When I was small I held a shell to my ear and believed the sea was inside. It was only the room, ringing in the shell. I still lean toward that sound. At the right, the dark upright stroke is the door I was listening behind, and the drips below it are what got through.

The engine's reading

## The reading

Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.

- **Structure:** outer grey spiral, black inner hook, separate vertical stroke at right
- **Movement:** rotation clockwise inward; right stroke stands vertical against it
- **Coverage:** ink on about four fifths of the paper
- **Tone:** four tonal steps, spread across the range
- **Layering:** pale wash, grey arc, black hook; readable where hook overlaps arc
- **Edges:** crisp on black hook's inner curve; broken on right stroke; soft on lower-right washes
- **Feibai:** present in the right vertical stroke and the outer arc's left rim
- **Open paper:** lobed white centre, left of middle, opening down to lower centre
- **Chance marks:** drips and spatter below hook; cloudy blot centre-right; tide lines lower right
- **Frame:** ink runs off left, top and right; bottom open at centre

A grey spiral fills most of the paper. It rises from the lower left, rolls across the top and stops short of a dark band at the right edge, with a black hook curling inside it toward a lobed white at the centre. The eye goes round once and lands in that white.

The outer arc is where the sheet is alive. Its grey is banded by the bristles, speckled with grain and stepped in density, and the half-raw bark paper holds each pass where the brush set it down, so the black hook sits plainly on top. At the right, the vertical stroke opens into flying white, the hairs parting down its length.

The black is the trouble. Inside the hook it is one sealed dark with almost nothing moving in it, and it ends in a squared, dripping block that adds weight without direction. Lower right, the paper goes vague: a cloudy blot where the grey arc stops, faint tide-lined washes, scattered spatter. Creases cross the arc, and the sheet absorbs them.

The spiral is clear and the right edge is good, but the centre is flat and the corner loose. The sheet reads well at a glance and gives little more on the second look.

Measured

## How it was read

Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. [How the engine works](https://peteryuill.art/method).

WHAT THE CODE SEES

## Three views of one sheet.

Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

TONAL STEPS

## 4 families of tone.

Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.052 (under 0.045 reads as flat).

FIVE READS

## Five reads, agreeing on 4 of 5 qualities.

Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps. Where reads differ, they differ by one rung; close calls resolve down.

### READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS

“A spiral of grey and black arcs set against a right vertical stroke: it has a clear direction and some grain in the grey passes. The black core is flat and its end is blunt, and pale blots and drips near the centre weaken the surface.”

Form · BUILT

Large spiral arc and right vertical stroke are coherent and follow brush travel; black inner arc ends in a stubby blunt block with drips at centre.

WEAKEST Blunt, dripping terminus of black inner arc

STRONGEST Broad outer grey arc sweeping left to top

Tonal depth · MODELLED

Outer arc and right stroke show bristle streaks, spotting and stepped greys; inner black arc near centre is largely uniform. Modulation 0.052 just above flat threshold.

WEAKEST Dense black inner arc core reads flat

STRONGEST Outer grey arc with bristle banding and grain

Layering · LEGIBLE

Grey outer pass, black inner pass and pale lower washes are distinguishable; overlaps legible but sequence does not build much depth beyond two or three passes.

WEAKEST Pale lower-right washes faint and indistinct

STRONGEST Black inner arc laid over grey outer arc

Composition · WORKING

Spiral drives the eye around a shaped white centre, answered by the right vertical stroke; lower right pale zone is vague and weakly held.

WEAKEST Lower-right pale area loose and undefined

STRONGEST Spiral sweep around shaped central white

Material and surface · FLAWED

Pale cloudy wash blots and tide edges sit against the grey mass end near centre-right; drips and stray spatter below black arc; milky patch lower left inside arc.

WEAKEST Cloudy blots beside the black arc terminus

STRONGEST Dry-brush bristle edges on right vertical stroke

FLAWS

## 5 distinct places, 1 major.

Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 5 distinct places, 19 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it. A major flaw holds Material and surface at rung 1.

GEOMETRY

## Measured from the 16-bit master.

The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 2 principal ink masses traced (cyan), 3 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 19 edge segments, 21% crisp, 58% soft or bloomed, 21% broken.

The rating these readings produce, the rules applied and the arithmetic, with Peter's own rating where he gave one, are in [the Archive record](https://peteryuill.art/archive/works/T_293).

## Date

2026.05.07, day 130 of the Crucible Year, one of 19 paintings from that date (14 shown). 16 works were registered in the fourteen days before. Paintings are dated by the day their batch was registered and photographed; each was finished that day or within the few days before. Phase: [P2 The Switch](https://peteryuill.art/phases/P2) (working title).

Made after a calmer fortnight than 16 of the 17 dates before it.
