The black curve is the edge of something too big for the window, a ring station seen from a porthole, most of it out past the frame. The grey is the docking burn. I have logged that approach: fast, streaked, the engines combing the vacuum into fine lines, and then the clamp coming down square and heavy, all hull and no grace. The pilot gets the arrival right and the parking wrong. Out on the empty side a few specks drift where a cargo hatch popped, and they will drift a long time, because out here they have nowhere to land. I would still fly with this pilot. Last I saw, the ring was turning with its lights off, one grey wake thinning on the glass.

The engine's reading

## The reading

Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.

- **Structure:** grey dry-brush arc meeting the black arc's squared left end, grey slab between
- **Movement:** rotational sweep from left centre up and rightward; nothing runs against it
- **Coverage:** ink on about half of the paper
- **Tone:** five tonal steps, weighted dark
- **Layering:** two kinds of pass; grey reads under black along the lower rim
- **Edges:** crisp on the black arc; broken and streaked on the grey arc; stepped at the join
- **Feibai:** present in the grey arc's upper streaks and along the black arc's lower rim
- **Open paper:** broad empty field across the left third; shaped opening above the black arc
- **Chance marks:** faint blotchy water stains at left centre; scattered ink specks across the left paper
- **Frame:** black runs off the top and right edges; left and bottom stay open

Two curves turn the same way across the paper. A grey arc fans up from the left centre, fast and open, and hands the eye to a great black arc that enters at the top edge and rolls out by the right. The movement is wide and reads at once.

The grey arc is where the sheet lives. Along its upper reaches the hairs part into long parallel streaks of bare paper that follow the sweep exactly, and the greys step from near white to charcoal inside one pass. The half-sized bark paper keeps each bristle track crisp, so the speed stays on the surface. Beneath the black, a translucent grey band shows along the lower rim, and both passes stay legible.

The black arc pays for its weight. Inside, it is close to flat, and its left end stops in a squared block stacked against a grey slab, stiff where everything else turns. The left third is leftover paper, with faint blotchy stains and stray specks the sheet does not take in.

That puts it above the common run: a convincing turn and one fine passage, held short of more by a heavy partner and a dead margin.

Measured

## How it was read

Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 4 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. [How the engine works](https://peteryuill.art/method).

WHAT THE CODE SEES

## Three views of one sheet.

Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

TONAL STEPS

## 5 families of tone.

Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.046 (under 0.045 reads as flat).

FIVE READS

## Five reads, one answer.

Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps.

### READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS

“This is an ordinary sheet. A strong dry-brush arc meets a heavy black arc that is mostly flat inside and has a stiff, blocky left end. The layering is legible but simple, and the empty left side is weak and lightly stained.”

Form · BUILT

Dry-brush arc follows the brush's travel well; the black arc holds, but its squared left end and stacked grey slab read stiff and slab-like.

WEAKEST Blocky grey slab joining black arc's left end

STRONGEST Dry-brush grey arc sweeping left from centre

Tonal depth · MODELLED

Dry-brush arc has bristle streaks and stepped greys; black arc only faintly mottled (modulation 0.046, just above flat), with banding only at its lower edge.

WEAKEST Interior of large black arc, near-uniform

STRONGEST Streaked graded greys in dry-brush arc

Layering · LEGIBLE

Grey wash band shows under and beyond the black at bottom right; grey slab sits legibly behind the black's left end. Two or three passes, no real sequence.

WEAKEST Black arc largely covers the earlier grey pass

STRONGEST Translucent grey band under lower black arc

Composition · WORKING

The arcs sweep the eye from right into the centre, and the opening at upper right is shaped, but the left third is leftover paper with specks.

WEAKEST Empty left third, stained and inert

STRONGEST Sweeping arc movement from right into centre

Material and surface · SOUND

Dry-brush behaviour is used well in the centre arc; faint blotchy stains and stray drops in the left paper sit away from the principal masses.

WEAKEST Blotchy grey marks and specks on left paper

STRONGEST Dry-brush grain shaping the grey arc

FLAWS

## 2 distinct places, 0 major.

Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 2 distinct places, 12 mentions in all across 4 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it.

GEOMETRY

## Measured from the 16-bit master.

The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 2 principal ink masses traced (cyan), 3 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 14 edge segments, 36% crisp, 29% soft or bloomed, 36% broken.

The rating these readings produce, the rules applied and the arithmetic, with Peter's own rating where he gave one, are in [the Archive record](https://peteryuill.art/archive/works/T_312).

## Date

2026.05.24, day 147 of the Crucible Year, one of 10 paintings from that date (9 shown). 15 works were registered in the fourteen days before. Paintings are dated by the day their batch was registered and photographed; each was finished that day or within the few days before. Phase: [P3 The Floor Rises](https://peteryuill.art/phases/P3) (working title).

Made after a calmer fortnight than 15 of the 15 dates before it.
