Ovid says Daedalus laid the feathers in order, the smallest first, each longer than the last, so the wing seemed to grow on a slope, the way the reeds of a shepherd's pipe climb in steps. These are those wings, stacked black over grey and opened as far as they go. On the left the trouble has started. Streaks fly off the edge, small and fast, the wax letting go a quill at a time, because somebody's son has climbed toward the sun. I would have told him. Fathers did. Down at the right, small and pale, is the door of the workshop they flew out of, still open, and below it the sea, waiting very calmly to be named after him.

The engine's reading

## The reading

Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.

- **Structure:** wide arc segments stacked as a fan, top slab joining the right arcs
- **Movement:** sweep up and left from lower right; upper-left spatter flies along it
- **Coverage:** ink on about three quarters of the paper
- **Tone:** four tonal steps, weighted dark
- **Layering:** pale rings, mid-grey segments, dark inner arcs; readable across the right half
- **Edges:** crisp outer arc walls; soft translucent overlaps; broken left end of lower panel
- **Feibai:** none
- **Open paper:** curved wedge at upper left, small pale opening at right edge
- **Chance marks:** spatter upper left and lower left; drops lower right; creases through darks
- **Frame:** ink runs off top and right edges; left edge and lower left stay open

A fan of broad arcs swings up and to the left from a hub just off the right edge. Each band is one wide stroke laid over the last. The eye meets the dark mass first, then rides the curve outward into pale rings and open paper.

The right arcs carry the sheet. Pale outer bands lie under mid-grey segments, and darker arcs lie on top. The half-raw paper holds each pass without drowning the one beneath, so the order of the passes reads cleanly. The innermost band bends round the small pale opening at the right edge and deepens toward its core, with the brush's grain left in it. Its walls hold, and its ends trail off dry.

The costs sit at the top and the lower left. The upper slab is boxy and nearly even inside, so the top right turns crowded and heavy. The grey panel at lower left loses its left end to spatter. Crease lines cross the darks and the centre-left panel mottles pale, and at viewing distance the sheet absorbs both.

These are the faults of a sheet with a real engine. The fan turns with conviction, and the right half is worth the whole.

Measured

## How it was read

Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. [How the engine works](https://peteryuill.art/method).

WHAT THE CODE SEES

## Three views of one sheet.

Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

![T_377]

![T_377, tone-stretched]

![T_377, classed by brightness]

77% of the sheet carries ink

TONAL STEPS

## 4 families of tone.

Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.053 (under 0.045 reads as flat).

FIVE READS

## Five reads, agreeing on 4 of 5 qualities.

Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps. Where reads differ, they differ by one rung; close calls resolve down.

### READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS

“I placed this sheet on rung 3 for layering and rung 2 on the other four ladders. It has R3's radiating arcs and layered passes but less refinement. The lower-left block is bulky. The upper block is flat inside, the top right is crowded, and minor creases show in the darks.”

Form · BUILT

Arc segments mostly follow brush travel with dry-brush edges; lower-left slab reads bulky, its left end dissolving into spatter rather than a held wall.

WEAKEST Lower-left block, ragged spattered left end

STRONGEST Right arc band curving round the open centre

Tonal depth · MODELLED

Stretched view shows grain and stepped density in right arcs and lower-left block; upper-centre dark block is mostly even; modulation 0.053 is only modest.

WEAKEST Upper dark block, fairly even interior

STRONGEST Right arcs with graded density and dark core

Layering · ORDERED

Several translucent passes of arcs and blocks overlap in clear order, pale outer rings under darker bands; sequence readable across right half like R3.

WEAKEST Dense overlaps at top right merge slightly

STRONGEST Translucent grey arcs overlapping beneath dark bands

Composition · WORKING

Radiating fan gives direction and the left paper is shaped by spatter and faint rings; top right is heavy and crowded, the fan cropped awkwardly.

WEAKEST Crowded dark mass at top right

STRONGEST Fan of arcs radiating around right-edge centre

Material and surface · SOUND

Ink controlled with dry-brush edges; stretched view shows paper crease lines through the dark blocks and speckled mottling in lower-left block, minor at viewing distance.

WEAKEST Crease marks across dark block interiors

STRONGEST Dry-brush trailing edges on arc ends

FLAWS

## 5 distinct places, 0 major.

Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 5 distinct places, 10 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it.

GEOMETRY

## Measured from the 16-bit master.

The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 1 principal ink mass traced (cyan), 5 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 11 edge segments, 64% crisp, 36% soft or bloomed, 0% broken.

The rating these readings produce, the rules applied and the arithmetic, with Peter's own rating where he gave one, are in [the Archive record](https://peteryuill.art/archive/works/T_377).
