The view just before you faint is a small white hole. I went down once in my aunt's kitchen, so I can report on the procedure. The edges leave first. Black comes inward from all sides, without any fuss, and the last of the room shrinks to a coin. Then a hand on your cheek. Your name, said by someone reading it off a label. Linoleum, cold against one ear. You come back annoyed and a little proud, with a bump to show around for a week. It is a modest catastrophe, and everybody gets one. Mine is still in there when I shut my eyes, bright and very small, with a tap dripping in it.

The engine's reading

## The reading

Written by the engine after V23's reads, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains V23's numbers and may not change them.

- **Structure:** large disc of arcs and spokes, joined at a small ringed white eye
- **Movement:** radial, converging on the eye; concentric arcs turn across the spokes
- **Coverage:** ink on about nine tenths of the paper
- **Tone:** one tonal step, weighted dark
- **Layering:** two kinds, translucent grey and dense black; readable at rim and right side
- **Edges:** crisp at square stroke ends and inner rings; broken at the rim
- **Feibai:** present, in arc ends at the right rim and lower left
- **Open paper:** narrow wedge from eye to bottom edge; slivers at top; open corners
- **Colour:** faint red wash at the left edge, above the horizontal bands
- **Chance marks:** paper creases in upper-left greys; no spatter, rings or blooms
- **Frame:** ink runs off top and upper left; right and lower corners stay open

A wheel of black fills the paper, turning around a small white eye just below centre. Every stroke aims at that eye, and the pull is immediate. One narrow road of bare paper drops from it to the bottom edge.

The life of it is on the right. Translucent arcs stack at the rim, and the alum-sized paper keeps each pass near its surface, so grey reads through grey. Lower down the bands turn grainy and the arc ends break into dry streaks.

Left of centre, that reading stops. Dark laid on dark has closed into one flat slab, the strokes and their order sealed inside it. Above it, square-ended blocks look filled more than travelled, and faint creases cloud their greys, a small matter. The red wash at the left edge is too thin to change anything.

So much ink leaves the white little to shape. The wheel grips at once, then offers one flank for a longer look. It is the kind of sheet a year of daily work produces most often: capable, clear across a room, short of surprises.

THE RATING

## T_389, rated 5.3

The combined score, out of 10: V23's reading of the photograph as the read half and V24's twelve tests on the 16-bit file as the measured half, added and divided by 10. The scale is relative to this archive. How each half is made is on the Method page.

Measured

## How it was measured

FROM THE 16-BIT FILE

## What V24 measured.

Plain physical facts with no model involved. Across the year they track how the practice changes. On one sheet they cannot say whether a mark is any good. Millimetres read a few percent high, because the photographs are cropped just inside the paper's edge.

MASS WIDTH 83 mm

The width of the ink mask along its medial axis.

DEPTH OF THE DARKS 1.58

Optical density at the 75th percentile of the sheet.

LARGEST VOID 103 mm

The radius of the largest circle of open paper.

DIRECTIONS 0.17

How far the marks align across the sheet. Lower means they run several ways.

BALANCE 0.37

Left and right asymmetry of the ink. Lower is more even.

THE FILE 4.22

Pixels to the millimetre in the TIFF these were measured from, with the studio light removed.

Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.17: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. [How the engine works](https://peteryuill.art/method).

WHAT THE CODE SEES

## Three views of one sheet.

Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

TONAL STEPS

## 1 family of tone.

Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Two or fewer: Tonal depth is held at the bottom rung whatever the model reads. A dense sheet of many translucent passes can count low here, so Layering is left to the reads. Life inside the black: 0.046 (under 0.045 reads as flat).

FIVE READS

## Five reads, agreeing on 4 of 5 qualities.

Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps. Where reads differ, they differ by one rung; close calls resolve down.

### READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS

“Radial burst akin to R3 in idea, but overloaded: near-total coverage, one tonal family and a fused black left-centre mass. Layering legible only at the rim; controlled ink, deliberate red wash.”

Form · BUILT

Radial strokes are coherent arcs and wedges converging on the centre eye; the left-centre dark mass merges into a bulky slab where stroke shapes are lost.

WEAKEST Fused dark slab left of centre loses individual strokes

STRONGEST Right-side radial strokes following arc of brush

Tonal depth · THIN

Measured one tonal step and 72% dark share; tone-stretched view shows grain on the right, but the large central-left black reads flat in colour view.

WEAKEST Broad flat black mass left of centre

STRONGEST Grainy banded greys in right lower quadrant

Layering · LEGIBLE

Many radial passes visible at outer edges and in tone-stretched view; toward the centre the overlaps darken into a single black, so order reads only at the periphery.

WEAKEST Overlaps near centre fused into continuous black

STRONGEST Stacked translucent arcs at outer rim, right side

Composition · WORKING

Strong radial movement to central ring with white bottom wedge; 90% coverage crowds the frame and the left half sits as heavy undifferentiated weight.

WEAKEST Crowded, near-total coverage leaves little shaped paper

STRONGEST Radial burst pulling eye to central white eye

Material and surface · SOUND

Ink controlled with dry-brush edges at rim; red colour wash at left is deliberate material; crinkled paper texture shows in upper-left greys, minor.

WEAKEST Paper creasing visible through upper-left wash

STRONGEST Dry-brush streak edges on radial strokes

FLAWS

## 2 distinct places, 0 major.

Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 2 distinct places, 10 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it.

V23's rules and arithmetic, and every figure under its own name, are in [the Archive record](https://peteryuill.art/archive/works/T_389).
