The great black curve is the flyover, and everything good in this city happens under it. They built it to carry traffic past us and it turned out to be a roof. Within a year there were noodles. Then a barber, a man who fixes only rice cookers, a Thursday church, a small shrine to whoever died pouring the deck. Up on the rim the red tail lights crawl toward somewhere better, and none of them looks down. I have eaten under that thing through three monsoons. The council sends a letter every spring, and the barber frames them. When the rain comes it falls off the edge in one long curtain, and forty people shift their stools a hand to the left without looking up.

The engine's reading

## The reading

Written by the engine after V23's reads, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains V23's numbers and may not change them.

- **Structure:** broken concentric arcs: central black segment, outer grey band, upper-right bars, separate lower-left wedge
- **Movement:** one sweep from lower left over the top to the right; spatter and pale washes cut across
- **Coverage:** ink on about nine tenths of the paper
- **Tone:** four tonal steps, weighted dark
- **Layering:** pale wash, grey band, black block and red pass; readable at upper right and left flank
- **Edges:** crisp on black blocks; stepped on grey left flank; broken on lower-left band and pale washes
- **Feibai:** present, in concentric streaks through the lower right of the central black arc
- **Open paper:** irregular wedge across the upper left; smaller gap at low centre beneath the arc
- **Colour:** red and orange ink along the top edge, at centre and right, fused with grey
- **Chance marks:** spatter top centre; speckled stain upper band; creases lower grey; pale bloom in central black
- **Frame:** runs off left, bottom, right and top; upper-left corner and lower centre stay open

A huge broken wheel crosses the paper, rising from the blunt wedge at lower left, jumping a gap of white, and rolling down off the right edge. The sweep registers from across a room and gives the bare paper at upper left and low centre real shape. Then the black arrives, and it is very large.

The life is at the rim of that black. At lower right the brush ran dry along the curve and left concentric streaks of paper through the dark, so the mass turns and has grain. Above it, a pair of dark bands overlap and stay see-through, the half-sized bark paper slowing the sink enough to keep each pass readable. A little red along the top warms the crest and stays small.

The middle pays. The left half of the black is a flat, cloudy slab with a stiff cut end, and it buries the passes beneath it. Speckled staining dirties the grey band beside the upper bars, and it shows. Fine creases low in the grey wedge are absorbed.

A clear arc and lively corners, with too much filled black between them. It is a competent large sheet, good to walk along at the edges and shut in the middle.

THE RATING

## T_415, rated 6.2

The combined score, out of 10: V23's reading of the photograph as the read half and V24's twelve tests on the 16-bit file as the measured half, added and divided by 10. The scale is relative to this archive. How each half is made is on the Method page.

Measured

## How it was measured

FROM THE 16-BIT FILE

## What V24 measured.

Plain physical facts with no model involved. Across the year they track how the practice changes. On one sheet they cannot say whether a mark is any good. Millimetres read a few percent high, because the photographs are cropped just inside the paper's edge.

MASS WIDTH 279 mm

The width of the ink mask along its medial axis.

DEPTH OF THE DARKS 1.81

Optical density at the 75th percentile of the sheet.

LARGEST VOID 296 mm

The radius of the largest circle of open paper.

DIRECTIONS 0.16

How far the marks align across the sheet. Lower means they run several ways.

BALANCE 0.69

Left and right asymmetry of the ink. Lower is more even.

THE FILE 3.87

Pixels to the millimetre in the TIFF these were measured from, with the studio light removed.

Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.13, on 2026.11.03: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. [How the engine works](https://peteryuill.art/method).

WHAT THE CODE SEES

## Three views of one sheet.

Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

TONAL STEPS

## 4 families of tone.

Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.055 (under 0.045 reads as flat).

### READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS

“A broken concentric arc with real sweep and shaped white gaps, but its central black is bulky and partly flat, layering is modest, and blotchy speckling mars the upper grey band.”

Form · BUILT

Concentric arc segments are coherent with holding walls, but the huge central black and blunt lower-left wedge remain bulky, more filled-in than stroked, unlike R3's fluent bands.

WEAKEST Bulky central black arc, heavily filled; blunt left wedge

STRONGEST Upper-right dark bands following the arc's travel

Tonal depth · MODELLED

Stretched view shows grain and arcs in the central black's lower right and mottled greys above, but its left half stays nearly uniform; modulation only modestly clears flat.

WEAKEST Left half of central black, flat and cloudy inside

STRONGEST Grained, striated right side of the central black arc

Layering · LEGIBLE

Grey wash, black arcs, overlapping upper-right bands and red pass read distinctly, but few overlaps build depth; the central black covers rather than layers, short of R3's sequence.

WEAKEST Central black mostly covers the earlier passes beneath it

STRONGEST Translucent overlap of the two upper-right dark bands

Composition · WORKING

The arc carries the eye from lower-left wedge across the top to the right, and the white gaps are shaped, but the central mass crowds and weighs the sheet.

WEAKEST Massive central black dominates; lower right is heavy and dead

STRONGEST Broken arc sweeping from lower left over to right

Material and surface · FLAWED

Dark speckling and dirty mottling in the upper grey band show in colour beside principal masses; cloudy patch inside central black in stretched view; creases in lower grey wedge.

WEAKEST Blotchy speckled grey band beside upper-right dark bands

STRONGEST Dry-brush striations at lower right of central arc

FLAWS

## 5 distinct places, 1 major.

Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 5 distinct places, 19 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it. A major flaw holds Material and surface at rung 1.
