Under the black hook is a door the width of a thumb. The rule of that kingdom is simple: you pay at the gate in red, a few drops, and the gate does not care whose. The great wheel above it is the bridge they lower once a year, rolled out in grey and hauled back in black, and the keepers scratch its turnings into the planks with their fingernails so the way home is never forgotten. The square block is the tax office. Every kingdom has one. It sits on the road and lets no light through. I paid. I went under the arch. On the far side someone had left the drawbridge chain lying in the grass, still warm.
The reading
Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.
- Structure
- two opposed arcs, joined across the lower centre by a square black block
- Movement
- one S-sweep left to right; the central block sits square against it
- Coverage
- ink on about four fifths of the paper
- Tone
- five tonal steps, weighted dark
- Layering
- grey washes, mid greys, black passes; readable at upper right and upper left
- Edges
- crisp at the hook and notch; soft at grey rims; broken along streaked arcs
- Feibai
- present, along the right arc's banded curve and its pale outer ring
- Open paper
- a wedge at top centre between arcs; a rounded notch under the hook
- Colour
- vermilion drops at bottom centre, beside the black block
- Chance marks
- small drip rings at the left edge; stray spots above the right arc
- Frame
- ink runs off left and bottom edges and top left; top right stays open
The eye lands on the big wheel at right and rides it. A grey curve rises from the left edge, dips through the middle, then climbs into a dark arch that rolls over and hooks back down, leaving a small rounded notch of bare paper beneath. The whole sheet reads as one long S.
The wheel is what matters here. The brush went round in bands, and where it ran fast the hairs parted into streaks of flying white that follow the curve. A pale grey ring under the black at its top still shows clearly: this half-raw bark paper holds each pass where it lands, so the washes stay distinct. The hook's inner edge is cut clean.
The cost is the slab in the lower centre. It is a filled square laid heavy and flat, and it buries the passes beneath it. Pressed against the bottom edge, it crowds the middle, and the red drops beside it, warm and well judged as accents, end up squeezed near the edge. A few drip rings at the left do no harm.
What stays is a good, solid sheet with one live half. The wheel is real painting. The block holds the rest back.
How it was read
Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.
Three views of one sheet.
Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

5 families of tone.
Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.045 (under 0.045 reads as flat).
Five reads, one answer.
Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps.
READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS
“The right arc is fluent, striated and modelled inside, but the central black slab is blunt and flat, and the bottom-left mass is crowded and cropped. A sound, ordinary sheet in the R3 idiom, sitting nearer R2.”
Right arc follows the brush's travel with concentric striations; the central square slab and left arc's upper edge are bulky and blunt, closer to filled blocks.
WEAKEST Central square block, bulky slab with stiff edges
STRONGEST Right arc with hooked inner end
Right arc shows arcs and stepped density; left arc has a soft graded swirl; central black block is mostly uniform. Dark modulation 0.0453 sits right at the flat threshold.
WEAKEST Central dark block interior largely flat
STRONGEST Right arc's concentric banding and dry streaks
Pale grey outer arcs, mid-grey left arc and the black passes stay readable where they overlap; the central block mostly hides what lies under it rather than building depth.
WEAKEST Dark block covers earlier passes beneath it
STRONGEST Translucent grey outer ring under right arc
Two arcs make an S-movement and shape the paper at top centre and bottom right, but the heavy black at bottom left is crowded and cropped. Ink covers 82% of the sheet.
WEAKEST Lower-left mass jammed against bottom edge
STRONGEST S-shaped sweep linking left arc to right
Ink is controlled and the dry-brush grain gives the right arc its form; small drip rings and spots sit at the left edge, away from the main masses. Red drops are deliberate.
WEAKEST Small drip rings near left edge wash
STRONGEST Dry-brush striations in right arc
4 distinct places, 0 major.
Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 4 distinct places, 11 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it.
Measured from the 16-bit master.
The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 1 principal ink mass traced (cyan), 3 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 17 edge segments, 59% crisp, 41% soft or bloomed, 0% broken.
The rating these readings produce, the rules applied and the arithmetic, with Peter's own rating where he gave one, are in the Archive record.
Date
2026.05.24, day 147 of the Crucible Year, one of 10 paintings from that date (9 shown). 15 works were registered in the fourteen days before. Paintings are dated by the day their batch was registered and photographed; each was finished that day or within the few days before. Phase: P3 The Floor Rises (working title).
