The pale line wandering across the grey slab is a shoreline. A sea stood there once, considered things, and left, and the edge it gave up is still drawn on the rock, fine as a hair. The rings came later: small bodies out of the dark, each leaving a lip and a hollow, none of them aimed, none of them sorry. I was there for the arrivals. On Mars the orbiters still argue over lines like this one, old shores or only cliffs. The world it belongs to has no weather now, only a long grey afternoon tilted toward a black horizon that keeps rising on the right. The last thing that happened here was water. Above it, white sky, holding still for nothing in particular.
The reading
Written by the engine after V23's reads, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains V23's numbers and may not change them.
- Structure
- stepped grey slab upper left, pale arcs above, dark crescent band sweeping beneath
- Movement
- rising left to right; the square-cornered slab sits against it
- Coverage
- ink on about nine tenths of the paper
- Tone
- four tonal steps, spread across the range
- Layering
- pale, grey and dark passes; readable at top centre, merged along the bottom
- Edges
- feathered dry crest top right; soft lower edges; blunt stepped corners on slab
- Feibai
- none
- Open paper
- white crescents along top centre and top right; narrow strip top left
- Chance marks
- tide line and rings across slab; rings in dark band; bottom blots; spatter top right
- Frame
- runs off left, right and bottom; top stays open except where pale arcs touch
A dark band climbs from the lower left and breaks against the top right corner. A pale grey arc swings the same way above it, so the eye crosses the sheet rising, twice, before it stops.
The climb is the good part. Where the dark band crests at upper right, the brush has run drier, and the edge frays into fine combed hairs against the pale arc. Raw paper grips a dry brush hard and keeps every fibre of that edge. At the centre the pale, grey and dark passes still read in order, one over the next, because unsized paper holds them apart.
The upper left is where it falls down. A grey slab sits there in stepped, square blocks, stiff against all that curve, and a wandering tide line and a crop of water rings cross it: water left standing on a fast paper, drying where it stopped. Below, the dark settles into an even cloud cut by vertical seams. Ink covers nearly everything; only the white crescents at the top breathe.
So: one real movement inside a crowded, uneven sheet. Fair work, lifted by its crest and held down by its corner.
The rating
T_147, rated 5.3
The combined score, out of 10: V23's reading of the photograph as the read half and V24's twelve tests on the 16-bit file as the measured half, added and divided by 10. The scale is relative to this archive. How each half is made is on the Method page.

How it was measured
What V24 measured.
Plain physical facts with no model involved. Across the year they track how the practice changes. On one sheet they cannot say whether a mark is any good. Millimetres read a few percent high, because the photographs are cropped just inside the paper's edge.
The width of the ink mask along its medial axis.
Optical density at the 75th percentile of the sheet.
The radius of the largest circle of open paper.
How far the marks align across the sheet. Lower means they run several ways.
Left and right asymmetry of the ink. Lower is more even.
Pixels to the millimetre in the TIFF these were measured from, with the studio light removed.
Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.
Three views of one sheet.
Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

4 families of tone.
Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.068 (under 0.045 reads as flat).
Five reads, agreeing on 4 of 5 qualities.
Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps. Where reads differ, they differ by one rung; close calls resolve down.
READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS
“The sweeping arc structure, legible layering and modelled dark band are ordinary for the archive. Water rings and a long tide line run across the principal grey slab and damage the surface, and the bottom of the sheet is crowded.”
The large arcs follow the brush's sweep and their walls hold. The upper-left grey mass is a stiff stepped block with bulky square corners.
WEAKEST Stepped, blocky grey slab at upper left
STRONGEST Sweeping dark lower arc rising to the right
The dark band shows grain, banding and stepped density (modulation 0.068), and the grey slab has texture. The pale arc at upper right is thin and even inside.
WEAKEST Pale upper-right arc is nearly flat inside
STRONGEST Dark lower band with grain and stepped density
There are about three passes: the pale arc, the grey slab and the dark band. The overlaps along the arc edges stay readable. Vertical seam bands complicate the sequence slightly.
WEAKEST Grey slab partly obscured where the dark band overlaps it
STRONGEST Translucent grey arc reading through the dark band edge
The counter-curving arcs give a clear left-to-right rise, and the paper shapes the crescent at the top. Ink covers 90% of the sheet, so the lower band feels packed.
WEAKEST Crowded, heavy lower edge with little breathing room
STRONGEST Rising diagonal sweep of the dark band
About a dozen water rings and a long pale tide line cross the upper-left grey mass. More rings and blots sit in the dark band on the right.
WEAKEST Rings and a meandering tide line across the grey slab
STRONGEST Dry-brush feathered crest of the dark band
6 distinct places, 3 major.
Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 6 distinct places, 23 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it. A major flaw holds Material and surface at rung 1.
Measured from the 16-bit master.
The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 1 principal ink mass traced (cyan), 1 enclosed void at true size in its grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 16 edge segments, 0% crisp, 81% soft or bloomed, 19% broken.
V23's rules and arithmetic, and every figure under its own name, are in the Archive record.

2026.03.27, day 89 of the Crucible Year, one of 10 paintings from that date (3 shown). 70 works were registered in the fourteen days before. Paintings are dated by the day their batch was registered and photographed; each was finished that day or within the few days before. Phase: P1 Warm-up (working title).
