The grey block at the top is the ironing board that never gets folded. You live around it. You turn sideways to reach the sink, you hang a shirt on it, it becomes the place the letters go. The black curve is the vacuum hose, which has also stopped going back in the cupboard. It lies across the room in one long loop, and everybody steps over it the same way, a small hop at the bend, until the hop is part of how the house is walked. Some things move in and never leave. In the evening the cat sleeps inside the loop, on the pale oval of rug it makes, as if it had been laid there to hold her.
The reading
Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.
- Structure
- black S-curve, grey slab upper right, mid-grey band crossing the lower limb
- Movement
- sweep from top centre, down the left, out to lower right; slab sits square
- Coverage
- ink on about four fifths of the paper
- Tone
- six tonal steps, weighted dark
- Layering
- pale grey band, black curve, mid-grey slabs; clearest where grey crosses the lower limb
- Edges
- crisp on the curve's inner wall; grainy on the dark wedge; streaked at the ends
- Feibai
- present, the pale outer band top left and the grey tail lower right
- Open paper
- white channel inside the bend, narrowing from centre out to the right edge
- Chance marks
- spatter and rings lower left, drops beside the slab, creases through the black
- Frame
- ink runs off top, left and bottom; right edge open except the lower corner
One black curve takes the sheet. It enters at the top, swings down the left edge and leaves along the bottom for the right corner, an S on its side. Inside the bend, a channel of bare paper runs out to the right edge.
The curve is what keeps it standing. Its walls hold, and the inner edge keeps the arc of the brush's travel. Faint stepped bands follow the turn inside the black, and fine crease lines web across it: the half-sized paper holds the ink at its surface, so every fold shows. Where a mid-grey band crosses the lower limb, the two passes stay separate and their order reads. Spatter at lower left and a bleached fleck at centre are small; the sheet absorbs them.
The grey slab at top right is where it gives ground. It is a blunt rectangle, even inside, streaked only at its rims, and it meets the curve at a stiff corner. Above the S it takes the air the curve needs.
That leaves an everyday sheet: one fluent stroke, crowded by ink across most of the paper and by a block that never moves.
How it was read
Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.
Three views of one sheet.
Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

6 families of tone.
Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.052 (under 0.045 reads as flat).
Five reads, agreeing on 4 of 5 qualities.
Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps. Where reads differ, they differ by one rung; close calls resolve down.
READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS
“A bold S-curve with legible grey layering and good direction. Blunt slabs, flat-ish grey interiors, a crowded right side and paper creases keep the sheet ordinary, near R2.”
The main S-curve band holds its walls and follows the stroke. The upper-right grey block and the dark wedge are blunt, slab-like fills.
WEAKEST Bulky grey rectangular slab, upper right
STRONGEST Sweeping dark S-curve following the brush's travel
The stretched view shows arcs and stepped density in the left and lower dark curve. The grey slab upper right is mostly uniform. Modulation of 0.052 is modest.
WEAKEST Upper-right grey block, nearly flat inside
STRONGEST Banded arcs inside the lower dark curve
Two or three passes: pale grey band, mid-grey slabs, black curve. The overlaps at lower centre read clearly, but the black mostly covers what lies under it.
WEAKEST Black curve largely covers the earlier grey passes
STRONGEST Grey bands overlapping the dark curve at lower centre
The strong S direction shapes the inner white loop. With 83% coverage the sheet is crowded, and the top-right slab sits heavily against the curve.
WEAKEST Upper-right block competes and crowds the right side
STRONGEST S-movement carrying the eye from top to lower right
Ink is controlled. Fine paper creases run through the black mass. There is a small white skip at centre and scattered drops lower left and right; all are minor.
WEAKEST Crease lines crossing the dark curve interior
STRONGEST Dry-brush feathered edge of the dark wedge
4 distinct places, 2 major.
Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 4 distinct places, 21 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it. A major flaw holds Material and surface at rung 1.
Measured from the 16-bit master.
The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 1 principal ink mass traced (cyan), 2 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 18 edge segments, 39% crisp, 50% soft or bloomed, 11% broken.
The rating these readings produce, the rules applied and the arithmetic, with Peter's own rating where he gave one, are in the Archive record.
Date
2026.04.26, day 119 of the Crucible Year, one of 13 paintings from that date (10 shown). 55 works were registered in the fourteen days before. Paintings are dated by the day their batch was registered and photographed; each was finished that day or within the few days before. Phase: P2 The Switch (working title).
