Every kitchen keeps one bowl past its time. Wide, heavier on one side from a bad firing, a chip near the base where it met the tap one winter. It holds nothing much: the end of the soup, keys, a lemon going soft. I have washed it late at night while someone slept badly in the next room, and set it upside down on the rack, and it dripped on the tiles all night, small round drops, very patient. It wins no compliments. Everybody reaches for it first. In the morning it is there again, empty, catching the window, the chip turned toward the light.
The reading
Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.
- Structure
- black slab at left, grey band along bottom, arc up right edge, one bowl
- Movement
- left to right along the bottom, then upward; the slab stands upright against it
- Coverage
- ink on about three quarters of the paper
- Tone
- five tonal steps, spread across the range
- Layering
- pale wash, mid grey, black; readable along bottom arc and lower right
- Edges
- bristle-broken at slab base and right arc; soft in centre greys; tide edges right
- Feibai
- present in the dark strokes at lower right and the base of the slab
- Open paper
- large oval, upper centre to upper right, held inside the arc
- Chance marks
- tailed blot at centre; drops across open paper; tide lines right; white fleck bottom
- Frame
- ink runs off left, bottom, right and top left; top centre and top right open
A wide bowl of ink runs along the bottom of the sheet and climbs the right edge, and what it holds is the point: a pale oval of paper, upper centre to upper right, flecked with flung drops. At the left, a black slab stands upright against the sweep.
The right arc is the more alive. Its dark strokes break into bristle streaks over a pale grey wash, and both passes stay legible, because raw paper this absorbent takes each layer where it lands and keeps it there. Below, the mid-grey band carries grain and stepped density. Where that wash dried at the right, it left wrinkled tide lines, and the sheet absorbs them easily.
The slab is where it pays. Its top is cut square, its inside is one sealed black broken only by a hairline crack, and it buries the grey laid under it. Packed against the left edge, it stops the movement the arc begins. A tailed blot at centre and a bare white fleck in the bottom band stay small.
That leaves the sheet in the middle of the archive: an arc worth having, an opening of paper worth seeing, and a block that will not move.
How it was read
Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.
Three views of one sheet.
Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

5 families of tone.
Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.071 (under 0.045 reads as flat).
Five reads, one answer.
Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps.
READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS
“A broad bowl arc with a heavy black slab at left. The forms and layering work at an ordinary level. The left black is flat inside, and a white hole and cloudy wash edges weaken the surface.”
Left black slab is a curved block with a bristle-trailed edge; the right arc follows the brush's travel; the centre grey wash is bulky and loosely bounded.
WEAKEST Bulky grey wash mass, centre-left, ragged and slab-like
STRONGEST Right arc sweep with dry-brush trailing strokes
Five tonal steps; modulation 0.071. The right arc and centre grey show graded texture, but the left black block reads mostly uniform inside.
WEAKEST Left black slab interior largely flat
STRONGEST Right arc greys with grain and wrinkle texture
Pale wash, mid-grey, and black passes stay distinct; the dark streaks at bottom right sit legibly over grey; the black slab mostly covers what lies beneath it.
WEAKEST Black slab covers earlier grey at left
STRONGEST Grey wash under dark stroke, bottom-centre arc
A large U-shaped arc carries the eye from the left block to the upper right and shapes the empty oval; the left side is heavy and blocky.
WEAKEST Heavy left block crowds left edge
STRONGEST Sweeping bowl arc enclosing open paper
A white void sits in the bottom-centre grey mass; wrinkled, cloudy wash and tide edges in the right arc; a drip blob at centre; a hair-line crack in the left black.
WEAKEST White paper hole/blot in bottom grey wash
STRONGEST Dry-brush bristle edges at lower left
6 distinct places, 2 major.
Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 6 distinct places, 18 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it. A major flaw holds Material and surface at rung 1.
Measured from the 16-bit master.
The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 1 principal ink mass traced (cyan), 2 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 15 edge segments, 33% crisp, 33% soft or bloomed, 33% broken.
The rating these readings produce, the rules applied and the arithmetic, with Peter's own rating where he gave one, are in the Archive record.
Date
2026.04.21, day 114 of the Crucible Year, one of 14 paintings from that date (10 shown). 63 works were registered in the fourteen days before. Paintings are dated by the day their batch was registered and photographed; each was finished that day or within the few days before. Phase: P2 The Switch (working title).
