I would dock here. The hole in the middle is exactly the size of a small ship running low on fuel, and the rings around it are the station's patience, added a shell at a time over generations. Out on the rim someone is still bolting grey plates into the vacuum, unhurried, each one a little crooked, each one holding. The long lower arm reaches for a planet that moved on years ago; it has not been told. Off to the right, a few black dots hang where the signal first came from. I answer them. The airlock cycles, the white opens like an iris, and I go in with my helmet under my arm.
The reading
Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.
- Structure
- eccentric spiral of arcs around a white eye, black fan right, band lower right
- Movement
- rotation inward to the eye; lower-right band pulls outward against it
- Coverage
- ink on about two thirds of the paper
- Tone
- four tonal steps, weighted dark
- Layering
- translucent grey passes beneath black arcs; readable around the outer fringe
- Edges
- crisp on black arcs and fan walls; soft and dry-brushed on outer grey tabs
- Feibai
- present in the curved arc strokes above and left of the white eye
- Open paper
- broad empty field top right; pale wedge lower left; small white disc at centre
- Chance marks
- scattered ink drops above the right grey band; faint creases at left
- Frame
- ink runs off top, bottom and lower right edge; left edge stays open
A wheel turns on a white eye set left of centre. Arcs tighten toward it, grey tabs fan out around the rim, and the whole sheet draws inward the way water finds a drain.
The thin rings nearest the eye are the finest drawing here. Each follows one pull of the brush, and in the arcs above the centre the hairs part into streaks of bare paper without losing the curve. Out on the left rim the grey tabs overlap in clear order. The half-sized bark paper holds each pass where it lands, so a later grey sits over an earlier one rather than sinking into it, and the dry ends fray cleanly against the white.
The weight goes wrong to the right. The big black fan has curved walls that track the stroke, but its interior is sealed and flat, with only faint grain to break it. Below, the horizontal band stacks pass on pass until the order clogs, then runs heavily off the edge and stalls the turning. A few stray drops on the bare paper above it barely register.
These are real weights, and the spiral outlasts them. The eye still rides the rings to the centre, and the emptiness at top right still breathes. A commanding engine with one heavy corner, and the engine wins.
How it was read
Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 4 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.
Three views of one sheet.
Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

4 families of tone.
Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.028 (under 0.045 reads as flat).
Five reads, agreeing on 3 of 5 qualities.
Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps. Where reads differ, they differ by one rung; close calls resolve down.
READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS
“This concentric spiral is close to R3 in idea and has good translucent layering. But the central black fan is flat and bulky, the bottom right is crowded, and stray drops mark the right paper.”
Inner arcs and thin rings follow the brush's curve fluently. The big black fan and the peripheral rectangular blocks are bulky and stamp-like.
WEAKEST Bulky central black fan, slab-like and filled
STRONGEST Thin concentric arcs around the white centre
Four tonal steps with real greys across the outer rings. The main black fan is flat inside (modulation 0.028); only faint brush grain shows in the stretched view.
WEAKEST Interior of large central black fan
STRONGEST Translucent grey outer blocks with stepped density
Several translucent passes stack outward in a clear order. The grey blocks stay readable under the black arcs, similar to R3's layered rings.
WEAKEST Bottom-right overlaps get dense and harder to read
STRONGEST Overlapping translucent grey blocks around left periphery
The spiral leads the eye inward and the empty paper at top right is shaped. The bottom-right band jams against the edge and the right edge feels crowded.
WEAKEST Crowded, cropped bottom-right band of blocks
STRONGEST Spiral pull toward the white eye
Ink is controlled and the edges are clean. Scattered ink drops sit on the paper at right, away from the principal masses, and faint creases show at left.
WEAKEST Stray drip dots on the right paper
STRONGEST Dry-brush edges on the outer grey blocks
4 distinct places, 0 major.
Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 4 distinct places, 7 mentions in all across 4 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it.
Measured from the 16-bit master.
The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 1 principal ink mass traced (cyan), 4 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 15 edge segments, 80% crisp, 13% soft or bloomed, 7% broken.
The rating these readings produce, the rules applied and the arithmetic, with Peter's own rating where he gave one, are in the Archive record.
