The wheel has a hole where the axle goes, and you can see the paper through it, which is how I know it is the old wheel, the one from the miller's story. Somebody spun all night. The thread came off pink, thin as a promise, and the room kept filling. By morning there was no straw left, only a chamber stacked to the rafters with dark, and a small man at the door asking for his fee. I would have paid it. You always pay it. In the versions I like, the girl learns his name. In this one she just keeps spinning, and the black climbs the wall, and the wheel is still warm.
The reading
Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.
- Structure
- ringed hub with central hole at left, two radial fans, stepped black mass at right
- Movement
- spiral from the left hub outward, up and right; the block's square steps resist it
- Coverage
- ink on about four fifths of the paper
- Tone
- four tonal steps, weighted dark
- Layering
- grey blades, black arcs, pink bands; all readable on left and centre
- Edges
- crisp squared blade ends; broken arc tails low centre; blunt stepped block edges right
- Feibai
- present in the black arcs round the hub and their tails at lower centre
- Open paper
- wide wedge across the top left, a narrow lit gap right of the hub
- Colour
- faint pink bands threading the hub rings and the centre fan
- Chance marks
- small stray ink dots on the upper-left paper
- Frame
- ink runs off bottom and right edges, touches top right; left and top left open
A wheel turns at the left of the sheet. Its axle is a small hole of bare paper. Its blades fly up and out to the right until they pile into a wall of black, and the eye rides that spiral the whole way, from the hub's tight rings to the far edge.
The left half is the achievement. Around the hub, dense black arcs are pulled in single strokes, and where the brush runs dry their tails part into combed white streaks at lower centre. Behind them, translucent grey blades overlap across the upper left, each pass lying over the last and still legible through it. The half-raw paper holds each layer at its edge before it spreads, so the greys step down cleanly, one shade beneath the next. Thin pink bands thread the rings like a seam of heat.
The right half pays for that. The great black block there is filled rather than drawn, its stepped corners blunt and its inside flat. The ink lies so thick it seals the paper and buries the passes beneath. A few stray dots on the upper-left paper are absorbed without harm.
The weight at the right is real, and it is a heavy hand on a sheet of real force. The motion that delivers us there is fast, layered and exact, and it is the reason to stand here.
How it was read
Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.
Three views of one sheet.
Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

4 families of tone.
Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.045 (under 0.045 reads as flat).
Five reads, one answer.
Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps.
READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS
“A radial spiral like R3, with good translucent layering, but the dominant black slab on the right is flat, bulky and crowds the sheet, which keeps form, tone and composition at an ordinary level.”
The left fan of arc strokes follows the brush's travel cleanly. The large right black block is a filled slab whose stepped edges are blunt and stiff.
WEAKEST Bulky black slab filling the upper right
STRONGEST Concentric arc strokes around the left centre hole
The left fans show stepped grey densities and brush grain. The right black mass is nearly uniform inside; the modulation of 0.045 sits at the flat threshold.
WEAKEST Interior of the large right black mass
STRONGEST Graded translucent greys in the left radial fan
Many translucent arc and blade passes overlap and stay readable, building depth across the spiral. On the right, the black covers the earlier layers instead of sitting over them legibly.
WEAKEST The right black mass buries earlier passes
STRONGEST Overlapping translucent fan blades on the upper left
A clear spiral carries the eye from the hole outward, and the upper-left paper is shaped. The right half is crowded and weighed down by the solid black block.
WEAKEST Heavy, crowded right half
STRONGEST Spiral sweep from the left hub out to the right
The ink is controlled, the dry-brush endings are used and the pink accents are deliberate colour. The one flaw is a few small spatter dots on the upper-left paper; the right black mass reads as surface.
WEAKEST Dead, flat surface of the right black block
STRONGEST Dry-brush edges on the arc strokes
2 distinct places, 0 major.
Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 2 distinct places, 10 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it.
Measured from the 16-bit master.
The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 1 principal ink mass traced (cyan), 6 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 16 edge segments, 38% crisp, 56% soft or bloomed, 6% broken.
The rating these readings produce, the rules applied and the arithmetic, with Peter's own rating where he gave one, are in the Archive record.
