I watched the grey come in low off the right, a squall dragging its belly over flat water, going thin at the leading edge until it was barely rain at all. You get a minute of that before the dark arrives behind it. Out ahead sits the block on the left, a boulder that has waited through every tide and will wait through this one too, unbothered, a little stupid, loyal to its spot. I'm fond of it. The squall reaches for it and runs out of breath a hand short. Then the gulls come down out of the white, small and black, and settle on the empty sand.

The engine's reading

The reading

Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.

Structure
dark slab with grey triangle at left; black arc and grey blade massed at right
Movement
leftward sweep from the right mass; the left slab angles against it
Coverage
ink on about three fifths of the paper
Tone
four tonal steps, weighted dark
Layering
grey wash, mid-grey arc, black thrust; readable at centre right
Edges
crisp on the left slab; ragged and tapering on the blade; broken spatter at right
Feibai
none
Open paper
broad irregular field across centre left and lower left
Chance marks
spatter rays lower right; drops near the left slab; grey smudge bottom left
Frame
ink runs off top and right edges; left edge and most of bottom open

A dark weather front moves in from the right. A heavy black arc crowns the top corner, and beneath it a grey blade sweeps left, narrowing to a point in the open field. At top left a dark slab stands angled against it.

The blade is the finest passage. Laid thin on raw bark paper, its grey stays open, and the black thrust cutting across it at centre right sits plainly on top, each pass legible. Above, the arc holds grain and banded density, and at the right edge dry brush and spatter rays fly where the paper gripped the hairs.

The slab answers weakly. It is one even pass, blunt at the corners, its dark sealed and nearly unchanged inside, a block set down where a stroke should have travelled. Below it, stray drops and a grey smudge near the bottom edge make the lower left look left over.

The right side is real painting, with direction, depth and readable order. The left does not hold up its end. The sheet is solid, well made and lopsided, worth crossing the room for the sweep alone.

Measured

How it was read

Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.

WHAT THE CODE SEES

Three views of one sheet.

Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

TONAL STEPS

READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS

“An ordinary, gestural sheet. A strong arc and modelled dark mass on the right, but a blunt, flat wedge at top left and a scattered empty field with stray blots keep it average.”

Form · BUILT

The central grey arc tapers fluently and the dark thrust has energy. The top-left slab and the right-edge dark mass are bulky and filled in.

WEAKEST Blunt dark wedge slab at top left

STRONGEST Grey sweeping arc tapering to a point at centre

Tonal depth · MODELLED

Modulation is 0.057 with four steps. The right mass shows grain and arcs inside. The top-left wedge is mostly flat, showing only faint texture in the stretched view.

WEAKEST Top-left dark wedge is fairly uniform inside

STRONGEST Right dark mass with grain, stepped greys and arcs

Layering · LEGIBLE

At right-centre the translucent grey arc and panels sit under the black thrust and the overlaps stay readable. Elsewhere passes mostly cover each other.

WEAKEST Top-left slab is a single pass

STRONGEST Grey arc under the dark thrust, right-centre

Composition · WORKING

The heavy right side and the curving arc set a direction. The left wedge is isolated, and the large lower-left paper with stray drips feels partly leftover.

WEAKEST Scattered spatter in the empty lower-left field

STRONGEST Arc sweeping from centre into the right mass

Material and surface · SOUND

The ink is controlled overall. Small drips and a grey smudge sit in the empty lower left, away from the principal masses. No tide lines are visible inside the darks.

WEAKEST Stray blots and smudge at bottom left

STRONGEST Dry-brush streaks and splash edges at right

FLAWS

3 distinct places, 0 major.

Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 3 distinct places, 10 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it.

GEOMETRY

Measured from the 16-bit master.

The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 2 principal ink masses traced (cyan), 3 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 13 edge segments, 62% crisp, 23% soft or bloomed, 15% broken.
