The black fish at the lower left swims in air. Where I come from the tide goes out of the sky every evening, the long grey wave draining away over the hills, and whatever was swimming up there gets left behind on the grass, gasping and dark and furious. Children are sent out with buckets. You tip the stranded ones into the well, where they sulk until morning and then climb back up the light when the sky floods in again. The lobed things at the lower right are the slow ones, piled together and arguing. This one has already turned its head toward the wave. It will make it. The fan at the right is still running with water, every streak catching the last of the sun.
The reading
Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.
- Structure
- grey diagonal sweep joining a right-hand fan, black band and blots laid over
- Movement
- crescent from upper left down then up right; spiky strokes upper left oppose it
- Coverage
- ink on about half of the paper
- Tone
- three tonal steps, spread across the range
- Layering
- grey wash pass under black; readable where the band crosses the arc, top centre
- Edges
- soft wash edges on the arc; hard tide edge top right; spiky spatter rims below
- Feibai
- present in the right fan's curved striations and the streaked top edge of the arc
- Open paper
- large wedge of white at left and below the arc, opening toward the bottom
- Chance marks
- spatter across left and lower right; pale spot trail bottom centre; mottling inside arc
- Frame
- grey wedge runs off the top edge; left, bottom and right stay open
A long grey sweep drops from upper left toward the bottom centre, turns, and climbs into a wide fan at the right. The eye rides that crescent end to end before it notices anything else, and the white below and to the left takes a clean wedge from the curve.
The fan is where the sheet is alive. The brush ran nearly dry over raw bark paper, and the paper's grip parted the hairs into concentric streaks of bare white, flying white that keeps the turn of the arm legible. At top centre a black band crosses the grey, and both stay readable, the black resting on the grain without drowning it.
The darks are the trouble. The fish-shaped mass at lower left and the lobed cluster at lower right are poured weight: pooled ink dries as a sealed film, flat inside, changing only at the rim. The lower-right lobes follow no stroke and crowd their corner. A trail of pale water spots and a tide line atop the fan are small and absorbed.
The result is an everyday sheet: a clear arc, one fine passage of dry brush, and dark masses that weigh on it without joining it.
How it was read
Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.
Three views of one sheet.
Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

3 families of tone.
Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.039 (under 0.045 reads as flat).
Five reads, agreeing on 2 of 5 qualities.
Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps. Where reads differ, they differ by one rung; close calls resolve down.
READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS
“An energetic sweep with a good dry-brush fan, but the dark masses are flat blobs and the lower right is cluttered with lobed drops. Ordinary, at or slightly below R2.”
Grey arc and right dry-brush fan follow the brush's travel, but the lower-right lobes and the fish-shaped lower-left blot are puddled blobs, not made strokes.
WEAKEST Lobed dark blobs lower right, random puddled shapes
STRONGEST Long grey arc sweeping from upper left
Fan and grey arc show grain and streaks, but the dark masses are flat inside (modulation 0.039). Only three tonal plateaus. Close call resolved down.
WEAKEST Flat dark interiors of blobs and upper band
STRONGEST Striated dry-brush fan at right
A translucent grey sweep and fan, then dark strokes and drops on top. The overlaps stay readable, but only about two passes.
WEAKEST Lower-right blobs sit as separate drops
STRONGEST Dark band laid over grey sweep, upper centre
The curving sweep gives clear movement and the open left with spatter has shape. The lower-right cluster of blots is crowded and scattered.
WEAKEST Crowded blob cluster lower right
STRONGEST Diagonal arc carrying eye toward right fan
Ink mostly controlled and dry-brush texture used at right. Mottled blotches in the grey arc and a trail of grey spots at bottom centre are minor.
WEAKEST Mottled cloudy patches inside grey arc
STRONGEST Dry-brush grain in right fan
5 distinct places, 0 major.
Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 5 distinct places, 14 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it.
Measured from the 16-bit master.
The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 7 principal ink masses traced (cyan), 6 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 27 edge segments, 41% crisp, 22% soft or bloomed, 37% broken.
The rating these readings produce, the rules applied and the arithmetic, with Peter's own rating where he gave one, are in the Archive record.
Date
2026.04.08, day 101 of the Crucible Year, one of 22 paintings from that date (11 shown). 37 works were registered in the fourteen days before. Paintings are dated by the day their batch was registered and photographed; each was finished that day or within the few days before. Phase: P1 Warm-up (working title).
