The streaks in the lower middle all lean the same way, which is how sleet arrives across a February field: sideways, certain, with somewhere to be. The big black shape on the right is the storm that sent it, already over the hill and sulking. The pale rings are where the first fat drops landed before the wind got serious. Constable would have stopped for this sky on Hampstead Heath; the calendars never do. It is no hurricane. It is the afternoon the sheep go and stand behind the wall, ears flat, steaming a little, patient as stones, while the sky tips one grey bucket after another onto the grass and a single crow rides it out on the fence post, furious and wet.
The reading
Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.
- Structure
- grey fan at left, black V at right, joined by a rising sweep
- Movement
- rising diagonal, lower left to upper right; end arcs curl back against it
- Coverage
- ink on about three quarters of the paper
- Tone
- six tonal steps, weighted to the middle greys
- Layering
- pale washes, mid-grey sweeps, black strokes; readable left and right, blurred in right cluster
- Edges
- splayed and crisp on the black V; soft on grey washes; broken in arcs
- Feibai
- in the grey arcs at lower right and the sweeps along the right edge
- Open paper
- ragged central band, top centre down to bottom centre
- Chance marks
- pale ringed drops centre and top; drip trail lower centre; slanting spatter; bloom in left fan
- Frame
- ink runs off left, right, top right and both lower corners; top and bottom centre open
The sheet moves on one long rise. From a grey fan at lower left, a sweep climbs through the middle to a black knot at upper right, and the eye travels with it. Two masses and a road between them: the structure is clear from across the room.
Everything good is on the right. A black V drops from the upper mass, and its walls hold. The raw bark paper grips a dry brush hard, so each edge of the V breaks into a fringe of fast, separate hairs. Beneath it, translucent grey arcs stay legible through the black, the best layering on the sheet.
The costs sit at the ends of the road. Above the V, the black core is flat inside: dense ink sank to the paper's limit and the mark stopped breathing. In the left fan, a dark blot sits ragged and lobed, with no travel in it. And the open centre is peppered with pale rings and a drip trail, so the empty paper reads as residue rather than space.
A fair sheet: a confident stroke and a clear route, gaining about as much as it loses.
How it was read
Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.
Three views of one sheet.
Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

6 families of tone.
Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.061 (under 0.045 reads as flat).
Five reads, one answer.
Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps.
READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS
“This gestural sheet is close to R2. Grey passes stay legible and a diagonal sweep links the left fan to the right V. Scattered ringed water stains, a ragged left blot and a flat black core hold it at ordinary or below.”
Right dark V and top-right mass read as made strokes with travel; left dark patch is a ragged blob; the central diagonal sweep holds.
WEAKEST Left dark blot, ragged and lobed
STRONGEST Right V-shaped dark stroke with splayed edges
Six tonal steps; the grey washes show grain and banding at left and centre, but the black core at top right is dense and flat.
WEAKEST Top-right black core flat inside
STRONGEST Left grey fan with granulated banding
Several translucent grey passes overlap at left and right and stay readable; black passes sit on top, and the order blurs in the right cluster.
WEAKEST Right washes muddled under the dark V
STRONGEST Translucent grey planes overlapping at left
Two masses joined by a rising diagonal give direction; the top-centre and lower-centre paper is cluttered with drops and lacks shape.
WEAKEST Centre-bottom spatter field feels leftover
STRONGEST Diagonal sweep linking left fan to right V
Many pale ringed blots with tide edges scattered across centre and top-centre; a vertical drip trail at lower centre; milky cloudy wash at left.
WEAKEST Ringed droplet stains across the centre
STRONGEST Dry-brush streaks at right edge washes
5 distinct places, 2 major.
Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 5 distinct places, 20 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it. A major flaw holds Material and surface at rung 1.
Measured from the 16-bit master.
The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 1 principal ink mass traced (cyan), 5 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 17 edge segments, 35% crisp, 35% soft or bloomed, 29% broken.
The rating these readings produce, the rules applied and the arithmetic, with Peter's own rating where he gave one, are in the Archive record.
Date
2026.04.15, day 108 of the Crucible Year, one of 11 paintings from that date (8 shown). 58 works were registered in the fourteen days before. Paintings are dated by the day their batch was registered and photographed; each was finished that day or within the few days before. Phase: P2 The Switch (working title).
