The black band is the wall the queen ordered built in a single night, square at the top because the masons ran out of moon. The drips along its crown are where they set down their buckets. Beyond it the pale fans are the provinces that never answered the summons, faint on the parchment, still argued over at court. I like the wall. It does not ring when you knock on it, which is a flaw in a spell and a virtue in a wall. Down by the curl of the tide, a few drops have fallen onto the white and lie there like buttons torn from a traveller who was running, and did not go back for them.
The reading
Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.
- Structure
- nested concentric arcs; pale fans left, mid-grey arc centre, black and grey bands right
- Movement
- clockwise rotation from upper left down to right edge; the lower tail curls back inward
- Coverage
- ink on about three quarters of the paper
- Tone
- three tonal steps, weighted to the middle greys
- Layering
- pale, mid-grey and black passes; readable at band edges, upper left and centre
- Edges
- crisp black band walls and squared top; soft, feathered pale fans; broken bristle ends on tail
- Feibai
- present in the curling tail and inner grey arc at lower centre
- Open paper
- broad white wedge at lower left, shaped by the curl of the tail
- Chance marks
- drips and blots atop black band; drops below tail at centre-left; bluish spots at right edge
- Frame
- ink runs off top, right and bottom; left edge and lower left stay open
The arcs turn clockwise, from pale fans at the upper left through a mid-grey band to a black wall at the right, with a grey band beyond it running off the paper. Low in the middle a grey tail curls back into the white and gives the empty lower left a shape of its own.
The greys hold the sheet. Raw bark paper grips a drier brush hard, so the mid-grey arc and the tail keep every bristle track: streaks running with the stroke, white paper flashing through where the hairs parted at speed. Where the black crosses the grey, the order of passes reads at the edge.
The black is where the sheet goes quiet. Laid that heavy, the ink seals the paper and drowns the bristle tracks, so the band sits flat beside the striated greys, its square top bled into small blots. The palest arcs at the upper left barely register, and the weight crowds right. Drops under the tail and fine crease lines are small; the sheet absorbs them.
The turn and the greys keep it standing. Its heaviest passage is its least alive, which leaves a well-made sheet short of a remarkable one.
How it was read
Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.
Three views of one sheet.
Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

3 families of tone.
Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.038 (under 0.045 reads as flat).
Five reads, agreeing on 2 of 5 qualities.
Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps. Where reads differ, they differ by one rung; close calls resolve down.
READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS
“This sheet of concentric arcs echoes R3 but is thinner: the black arc is flat inside, the layering is simple, the upper left is weak, and drips mark the black arc's top edge. An ordinary, working sheet.”
Concentric arcs hold and follow the brush's travel; the dark arc's top end is cut square, and the pale left arcs dissolve into soft, loose edges.
WEAKEST Blunt squared top end of dark arc with drips
STRONGEST Mid-grey arc sweeping into dry-brush tail
Grey bands show bristle streaks and graded tone; the measured dark-interior modulation is under the flat threshold, with only faint banding in the black arc; three tonal steps.
WEAKEST Dark arc interior largely flat (modulation 0.038)
STRONGEST Grey arcs streaked with bristle grain and arcs
Pale, mid-grey and black arc passes overlap translucently and stay readable, but the order is simple and the overlaps add little depth.
WEAKEST Pale left arcs barely register as a pass
STRONGEST Black arc laid over the mid-grey band, legible
The rotating arcs give a strong clockwise direction and the lower-left void is shaped; the upper left is pale and weak, and the weight is crowded right.
WEAKEST Washed-out upper-left quarter
STRONGEST Sweeping spiral carrying eye to lower right
Small runs and blots sit on the top edge of the black arc, drops trail below the grey arc at centre-left, crease lines cross the grey bands, and there are bluish spots at the right edge.
WEAKEST Drips and blots at top of black arc
STRONGEST Dry-brush grain in grey arc tail
5 distinct places, 0 major.
Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 5 distinct places, 17 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it.
Measured from the 16-bit master.
The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 3 principal ink masses traced (cyan), 6 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 19 edge segments, 32% crisp, 47% soft or bloomed, 21% broken.
The rating these readings produce, the rules applied and the arithmetic, with Peter's own rating where he gave one, are in the Archive record.
Date
2026.05.31, day 154 of the Crucible Year, one of 8 paintings from that date (6 shown). 10 works were registered in the fourteen days before. Paintings are dated by the day their batch was registered and photographed; each was finished that day or within the few days before. Phase: P3 The Floor Rises (working title).
