The long white streaks in the lower bands are a train that did not stop. I was on the platform when it went through, the push of air, the carriages run together into one grey smear. The next one stopped, and the dark pane at the centre is its window, flat and black, the glass scratched all over by keys: tags, initials, fine lines crossing each other and meaning something only to whoever cut them. My reflection sat in it, faint, where the dark goes deepest. The doors sighed. I got on. Outside, the city ran backwards in pale stripes, and the scratches stayed put on the glass, laid over all of it, like frost that had learned to write.
The reading
Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.
- Structure
- nested curved bands stacked concentrically around a dark central slab
- Movement
- lateral sweep along a gentle bow; diagonal creases cut across lower centre
- Coverage
- ink on about nine tenths of the paper
- Tone
- three tonal steps, weighted to the middle greys
- Layering
- four kinds of pass, readable at stepped edges, clearest left and above core
- Edges
- crisp on the central slab; soft and ragged at the outer band ends
- Feibai
- present in the lower bands, strongest at lower left
- Open paper
- narrow strip along the top, widening toward the right margin
- Chance marks
- crease and crack lines through the dark core and grey bands; small dark specks at left
- Frame
- ink runs off the left and bottom edges; top and right stay open
Broad passes of ink are stacked one inside another and bowed into a shallow curve, so the whole sheet travels sideways as a single wide arc. Pale grey sits at the outside and a dark slab at the core. The eye walks inward in clear steps, each pass still visible where it lies over the last.
The lower bands are where the painting comes alive. A wide brush crossed the bottom third in long, fast strokes. The raw bark paper grips a dry brush hard, so the hairs split into parallel white streaks while the stroke kept its curve. Grey, grain and bare paper share every band, and the arm's travel is legible in all of it.
The centre is weaker. The dark slab is filled rather than drawn, with blunt squared ends and almost no change inside, and it stops short of a true black. Fine creases run straight through it and show most on that dense tone. At the right, the overlapping greys thicken toward mud, and the block sits dead centre with only leftover paper above.
Where that leaves it is solid ground. The layering is clear from edge to core and the lower bands move with conviction. The slab at the middle keeps the sheet calm and a step short of lifting.
How it was read
Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.
Three views of one sheet.
Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

3 families of tone.
Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.046 (under 0.045 reads as flat).
Five reads, agreeing on 4 of 5 qualities.
Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps. Where reads differ, they differ by one rung; close calls resolve down.
READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS
“Nested curved translucent bands with legible, well-ordered layering. The central dark slab is stiff and only faintly modelled, and the centred, near-full-coverage layout is static. Fine creases cross the dark centre. Overall an ordinary sheet.”
The nested curved bands hold their walls and follow a sweep, but the central dark trapezoid and the mid-grey block are bulky and filled in rather than drawn.
WEAKEST Central dark band reads as a stiff filled slab
STRONGEST Lower dry-brush curved bands following the brush's travel
dark_interior_modulation is 0.046, just above flat. The centre shows faint horizontal banding and the outer greys are grained. The sheet has three tonal steps and no real black.
WEAKEST Central dark mass is nearly flat, with only faint banding
STRONGEST Streaked grey dry-brush bands in the lower third
At least four nested translucent passes (pale outer, grey, darker grey, dark centre) stay legible where they overlap, and their order reads clearly across the sheet.
WEAKEST Right-edge overlaps blur the order slightly
STRONGEST Concentric translucent passes stepping from pale to dark centre
Ink covers 87% of the sheet. The concentric arrangement holds and the curve gives some movement, but the centred slab is static and the top paper strip is mostly leftover.
WEAKEST Centred block sits statically, leaving little shaped paper
STRONGEST Gentle curve of the stacked bands giving lateral sweep
The ink is controlled and the dry-brush grain is used in the lower bands. Fine paper-crease cracks run through the dark centre, and a few small specks sit in the top-left and left greys.
WEAKEST Crease lines crossing the central dark mass
STRONGEST Dry-brush streaking in the lower bands
4 distinct places, 0 major.
Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 4 distinct places, 11 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it.
Measured from the 16-bit master.
The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 4 principal ink masses traced (cyan), 5 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 19 edge segments, 21% crisp, 37% soft or bloomed, 42% broken.
The rating these readings produce, the rules applied and the arithmetic, with Peter's own rating where he gave one, are in the Archive record.
Date
2026.05.31, day 154 of the Crucible Year, one of 8 paintings from that date (6 shown). 10 works were registered in the fourteen days before. Paintings are dated by the day their batch was registered and photographed; each was finished that day or within the few days before. Phase: P3 The Floor Rises (working title).
