Somebody launched a ring station and never closed the ring. It comes round in good order, a long clean burn, and then the last module goes up square, a cargo container bolted on at the end of the orbit because the curved sections never shipped. I would live there. The people in the square module would have the worst windows and the best stories. Out past the hull the dust drifts in long grey sheets, and a docking light blinks for a supply ship that turned back at the gas giant. The station turns all the same, its one heavy corner swinging into the sun, then out, then in.
The reading
Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.
- Structure
- one great arc, lower left round to centre-right, grey arcs nested inside
- Movement
- clockwise sweep from lower left to upper right; loose grey sweeps cross its end
- Coverage
- ink on about nine tenths of the paper
- Tone
- four tonal steps, spread across the range
- Layering
- pale grey washes, grey arcs, black overlay; clearest at right
- Edges
- crisp at the black's squared end; broken at right; soft inside the bowl
- Feibai
- present, along the arc's upper edge and in grey sweeps at lower right
- Open paper
- pale crescent inside the arc, lower centre, crossed by grey
- Chance marks
- spatter at right and lower centre; blots bottom left; rings and bloom at left
- Frame
- ink runs off all four edges; top right corner nearly bare
One stroke runs the show. It climbs from the bottom left, rolls across the top and comes down at centre-right, and the eye rides it the whole way round a pale bowl of grey.
The best of it is in the travel. Along the upper edge of the arc the hairs part into fine bare streaks that keep the curve's direction. Below, the inner grey band lies in stepped density, and the half-sized bark paper holds each bristle track apart. Pale washes at right sit behind the black and stay legible through the overlap.
Then the stroke stops. Its end is a square slab of black, filled to the edges and nearly flat inside, so the motion that carried the sheet arrives at a wall. Inside the bowl the grey turns cloudy and mottled, with bubbled rings along the left edge and blots near the bottom corner. With ink across almost all the paper, the centre has nowhere to breathe.
That leaves a sound sheet of the common sort: a good arc, plainly travelled, that spends itself on a block and a muddied middle. Look at it for the climb.
How it was read
Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.
Three views of one sheet.
Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

4 families of tone.
Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.070 (under 0.045 reads as flat).
Five reads, one answer.
Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps.
READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS
“A bold sweeping arc gives this sheet clear movement. The black end is blunt, the sheet is crowded, and the interior wash is cloudy, with ring and blot accidents near the arc. Overall it is ordinary, close to R2.”
The main arc follows the stroke's travel. Its darkest stretch on the right ends in a blunt rectangular block, and the lower-left tail is bulky.
WEAKEST Squared, slab-like blunt end of the black arc
STRONGEST Grey outer arc following the brush's sweep
Dark modulation is 0.070 with 4 tonal steps. The upper arc shows bristle banding, but the black slab at centre-right reads mostly flat inside.
WEAKEST Densest black block near the arc's end
STRONGEST Banded grey arcs inside the lower curve
Grey washes sit under the black arc and spread across the right side. They stay readable at the overlaps, but there are only about two or three passes.
WEAKEST Black arc mostly covers the earlier grey passes
STRONGEST Pale grey strokes on the right behind the black edge
One big arc gives clear movement from left to upper right. Ink coverage is 0.89, so little empty paper is left, and the inner field is muddled and crowded.
WEAKEST Crowded, murky centre inside the arc
STRONGEST The sweeping arc driving across the sheet
There is cloudy, blotchy grey inside the curve and bubbly rings along the left arc edge. Dark blots sit bottom left, and a paper crease crosses the top of the black.
WEAKEST Cloudy, mottled wash inside the arc
STRONGEST Dry-brush grain along the arc's upper edge
5 distinct places, 2 major.
Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 5 distinct places, 17 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it. A major flaw holds Material and surface at rung 1.
Measured from the 16-bit master.
The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 1 principal ink mass traced (cyan), 8 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 15 edge segments, 60% crisp, 13% soft or bloomed, 27% broken.
The rating these readings produce, the rules applied and the arithmetic, with Peter's own rating where he gave one, are in the Archive record.
Date
2026.04.18, day 111 of the Crucible Year, one of 12 paintings from that date (8 shown). 56 works were registered in the fourteen days before. Paintings are dated by the day their batch was registered and photographed; each was finished that day or within the few days before. Phase: P2 The Switch (working title).
