The ring is going up in sections. I watched them dock: pale ones first, then grey, then the black ones with the heavy shielding, each lowered onto the last until the curve held its own weight. Below it hangs the world, white and unlit, still uninhabited. The colonists are still asleep somewhere past the right edge, where the ring runs out of sky. One module came in square. It docked all the same, at the far end, too stiff for the curve, and the engineers left it there because it held pressure, and because by then someone was living in it. Hairline cracks run across the hull from the long trip in. On the morning shift the black sections face the sun first and stay warm longest.
The reading
Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.
- Structure
- stacked curved segments forming one broad arc around an open circle
- Movement
- diagonal sweep from top left to bottom right; squared top-left block resists the curve
- Coverage
- ink on about four fifths of the paper
- Tone
- five tonal steps, weighted dark
- Layering
- pale, mid-grey and black passes, readable along the whole sweep
- Edges
- crisp segment walls along the arc; dry, frayed ends at block corners
- Feibai
- none
- Open paper
- half circle under the arc at bottom right of centre; wedge at lower left
- Chance marks
- crease lines across central greys, spatter at left margin, drips bottom centre
- Frame
- arc runs off right, bottom and top edges; left edge stays open
A single wheel of ink turns across the paper, from a black slab at upper left, over the top in pale bands, and down off the right edge around a half circle of bare white. Built in curved segments, it moves the eye the way the brush moved.
The inner arc is the best of it. Along the lower band the bristles left fine concentric grooves, and the half-sized bark paper holds them crisp. Centre right, translucent passes stack without sinking into one another: pale rings beneath, mid-grey over them, black on top, each crossing a clean darker step. Even the dark arc at right keeps grain inside its black.
The costs sit at the ends. The top-left block is a squared slab with a flat core, and it parks at the start of the curve instead of turning with it. The lower-left paper reads as leftover, and the right edge jams against the frame. Fine crease lines cross the central greys, and the sweep absorbs them.
The movement is earned from end to end, and the faults stay local, costing balance but never the arc. A strong, confident sheet.
How it was read
Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.
Three views of one sheet.
Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

5 families of tone.
Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.072 (under 0.045 reads as flat).
Five reads, agreeing on 4 of 5 qualities.
Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps. Where reads differ, they differ by one rung; close calls resolve down.
READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS
“A layered arc composition close to R3 in kind, with good tonal range and readable translucent passes. It is less resolved: there is a slab-like top-left block, a passive lower-left corner and creases across the arcs.”
Inner and right arc bands curve with the stroke and hold their walls; the top-left black block is a blunt, squared slab with ragged left edge.
WEAKEST Top-left dark block, a stiff rectangular slab
STRONGEST Lower inner arc band following brush travel
Five tonal steps; arcs show brush banding and stepped density; right dark arc modulated (0.072); greys range from pale outer bands to black.
WEAKEST Top-left black block fairly even in its core
STRONGEST Right dark arc with grain and banding
Several translucent passes stacked as arc segments; overlaps legible as darker steps, order readable from pale outer bands to dark inner blocks.
WEAKEST Upper-right pale bands blur into each other
STRONGEST Overlapping translucent arc segments centre-right
Large arc carries the eye diagonally and the inner void is shaped; lower-left corner is passive and the mass crowds the right edge.
WEAKEST Lower-left empty paper feels leftover
STRONGEST Sweeping arc from top-left to bottom-right
Ink controlled with dry-brush edges; crumple crease lines cross the central masses, small spatter at left margin and drips bottom centre, away from principal masses.
WEAKEST Crease lines crossing central arcs
STRONGEST Dry-brush banding in inner arc
4 distinct places, 0 major.
Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 4 distinct places, 17 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it.
Measured from the 16-bit master.
The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 1 principal ink mass traced (cyan), 4 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 14 edge segments, 36% crisp, 57% soft or bloomed, 7% broken.
The rating these readings produce, the rules applied and the arithmetic, with Peter's own rating where he gave one, are in the Archive record.
Date
2026.06.03, day 157 of the Crucible Year, one of 12 paintings from that date. 18 works were registered in the fourteen days before. Paintings are dated by the day their batch was registered and photographed; each was finished that day or within the few days before. Phase: P3 The Floor Rises (working title).
