The great black curl is a record on the turntable, the pale centre is its label, and the broad dark band coming in across the bottom is the arm, set down a little too hard by a hand that has done it every Sunday for years. You hear the crackle before the music. In our house the records came out after lunch, when the dishes were done and talking over the good part was not allowed. The creases are the scratches everyone knew by heart and sang around. The spatter at the top right is dust caught in the light from the window, turning slowly. At the end of the side the needle rides the run-out groove, round and round, softly knocking, until somebody gets up.
The reading
Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.
- Structure
- outer black arc, inner grey band and dry black horseshoe, joined by one diagonal
- Movement
- clockwise spiral turning inward to the white core; nothing runs against it
- Coverage
- ink on about nine tenths of the paper
- Tone
- four tonal steps, weighted dark
- Layering
- grey ring wash, black arcs, inner grey band; readable at top right
- Edges
- broken dry edges on inner arc; crisp small bar at bottom right; soft blooms bottom left
- Feibai
- present along the inner black arc and the pointed tail of the lower sweep
- Open paper
- egg-shaped white core left of centre, inside the spiral
- Chance marks
- spatter at top right; blooms and tide edges bottom left and bottom centre
- Frame
- ink runs off top, right and bottom; left edge almost reached; top corners open
A spiral turns clockwise from a heavy black arc at the left, over the top, and down through a broad diagonal that leaves by the right edge. It winds around an egg of white paper left of centre, and the eye circles that white first.
The inner black arc is the finest thing here. A drier brush cut this horseshoe, and the half-raw bark paper caught every hair: along its upper edge the stroke opens into parallel streaks of bare paper while the curve keeps its weight and direction. At top right, a translucent grey ring stays readable under the outer black, because half-sized paper holds each pass where it lands.
Weight is the cost. The lower sweep is a slab, near-black and almost unchanged inside, so the largest mass says the least. At bottom left the outer arc's foot dissolves into pale wash that spread and dried in blotches and tide edges, and the corner turns to mud. Creases in the paper run through the darks, and the sheet absorbs them.
The spiral holds and the white core is well shaped. A good sheet, firmly built, whose best passage is lighter than everything around it.
How it was read
Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.
Three views of one sheet.
Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

4 families of tone.
Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.063 (under 0.045 reads as flat).
Five reads, agreeing on 2 of 5 qualities.
Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps. Where reads differ, they differ by one rung; close calls resolve down.
READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS
“Fluent spiral of layered arcs with legible pass order and strong rotational movement; crowded coverage, flat lower diagonal and bloomy wash runs at lower-left hold it near the archive average.”
Outer spiral arc, inner dry-brush arc and long diagonal sweep all follow brush travel; small bottom-right stroke exact; only lower-left terminus softens into wash.
WEAKEST Ragged dissolving lower-left end of outer arc
STRONGEST Inner dry-brush black arc ending in crisp hook
Outer arc shows bands and stepped density; inner arc has dry-brush grain; the dark lower-right sweep reads largely uniform in colour view.
WEAKEST Lower diagonal black sweep, near-flat interior
STRONGEST Outer arc's grey-to-black banding along its curve
Wide translucent grey ring, dark outer arc, inner grey band, dry black arc and diagonal sweep sit in readable order; overlaps at top right stay legible.
WEAKEST Dark diagonal covering earlier grey passes beneath
STRONGEST Grey ring beneath dark arc at top right
Spiral and diagonal give strong rotation into the white core, but 88% coverage leaves empty paper mostly leftover except the centre; lower-left is muddled.
WEAKEST Crowded lower half, little shaped empty paper
STRONGEST Spiral movement drawing eye into central white
Pale wash runs with ragged bloom edges at lower-left and bottom-centre abut the main arc, visible in colour view; paper creases cross dark masses.
WEAKEST Bloomy wash runs at lower-left beside outer arc
STRONGEST Dry-brush grain on inner black arc
7 distinct places, 1 major.
Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 7 distinct places, 17 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it. A major flaw holds Material and surface at rung 1.
Measured from the 16-bit master.
The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 2 principal ink masses traced (cyan), 3 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 18 edge segments, 61% crisp, 22% soft or bloomed, 17% broken.
The rating these readings produce, the rules applied and the arithmetic, with Peter's own rating where he gave one, are in the Archive record.
Date
2026.05.07, day 130 of the Crucible Year, one of 19 paintings from that date (14 shown). 16 works were registered in the fourteen days before. Paintings are dated by the day their batch was registered and photographed; each was finished that day or within the few days before. Phase: P2 The Switch (working title).
