I was told the black was a wall the old king built to keep the weather out, and that the wall had one flaw: a chip of white no bigger than a fingernail, low in the masonry. The rules of that country say a flaw is a door if you are small enough. I was small enough. On the far side the dots were a herd of something feeding on empty pasture, too far apart to be a flock, too many to be strays. The king never came. The wall kept standing, squared off where the masons ran out of stone, and the herd kept grazing toward the edge of a map that had none.
The reading
Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.
- Structure
- dark arc ending in squared slab; grey block below; pale grey arcs upper right
- Movement
- rotational sweep from lower left up and right; lower grey block sits against it
- Coverage
- ink on about three quarters of the paper
- Tone
- four tonal steps, spread across the range
- Layering
- pale arcs, grey wash, black stroke, spatter; readable where grey shows past black
- Edges
- crisp at the slab's squared end; soft bleed beneath it; feathered at lower left
- Feibai
- upper right grey arc bands; lower left tail of the dark arc
- Open paper
- broad rounded field, lower right, bounded by the arc
- Colour
- faint blue flecks, lower centre and lower right
- Chance marks
- dot spatter across right half; cloudy bloom under slab; crease lines through black
- Frame
- ink runs off top, left and bottom; lower right and right edge stay open
A dark arc swings up from the bottom left and stops hard at the top centre, squared off like a cut end. Pale grey bands circle behind it at the upper right, so the whole sheet turns on a wheel, the black riding its rim. The right is open paper and scattered dots.
The arc is best low down. At the lower left the brush thins, the hairs part, and the black frays over the grey bands beneath it. The half-raw bark paper grips dry ink, so that feathered edge stays clean and the striations read as speed.
Higher up the stroke stops travelling. Its end becomes a slab, dense and nearly flat inside, crossed by crease lines in the paper. A milky bleed spreads from its lower edge around a small white fleck. Below, the grey wash is a filled block with nothing moving in it, and the dots on the right drift without much order.
So the sheet has a real launch and a heavy landing. The lower stroke repays the look. The rest is competent and unresolved, stiff at the top and thin on the right, a sheet of the common run.
How it was read
Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.
Three views of one sheet.
Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

4 families of tone.
Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.045 (under 0.045 reads as flat).
Five reads, one answer.
Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps.
READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS
“A bold arc ends in a blunt dark slab over grey washes, with spatter in an open right half. The tone and layering work at a modest level. A cloudy bleed and creases mark the dark mass. An ordinary sheet overall.”
Main dark stroke curves fluently up the left edge but ends top-centre in a squared, bulky slab; lower grey wash is a broad filled block.
WEAKEST Blunt slab-like rectangular end of dark mass
STRONGEST Sweeping left arc following brush travel
Dark interior modulation 0.045, right at the flat threshold; stretched view shows striated arcs and density steps in the dark mass, but the grey block below is uniform.
WEAKEST Lower centre grey wash, flat inside
STRONGEST Brush striations through the dark arc
Pale grey sweeping arcs, a mid-grey block and the black stroke read as separate passes; the black largely covers what lies under it.
WEAKEST Dark slab mostly covers earlier grey passes
STRONGEST Grey arc bands under the dark stroke on the left
Strong diagonal arc drives the eye; pale arcs echo it at top right; the lower right is open paper with only dot spatter, so it feels thin.
WEAKEST Right half empty except scattered dots
STRONGEST Large arc sweeping from bottom left to top centre
Soft, milky grey cloud spreads beneath the dark block near centre; crease lines run through the dark interior; small white skip at centre.
WEAKEST Cloudy bleed below the dark block's lower edge
STRONGEST Feathered dry-brush edge on the lower left of the arc
3 distinct places, 2 major.
Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 3 distinct places, 15 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it. A major flaw holds Material and surface at rung 1.
Measured from the 16-bit master.
The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 1 principal ink mass traced (cyan), 6 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 15 edge segments, 13% crisp, 67% soft or bloomed, 20% broken.
The rating these readings produce, the rules applied and the arithmetic, with Peter's own rating where he gave one, are in the Archive record.
Date
2026.05.07, day 130 of the Crucible Year, one of 19 paintings from that date (14 shown). 16 works were registered in the fourteen days before. Paintings are dated by the day their batch was registered and photographed; each was finished that day or within the few days before. Phase: P2 The Switch (working title).
