I read the bands as rock. Grey beds laid down in some shallow sea, then a coal seam, black and dense, a whole forest pressed flat for longer than anything has had a name. Then the shove from below, and the stack bent up into an arch, slowly enough that the sea never noticed it was leaving. The seam ends square at the left, the way seams end at a fault: the rest of it went sideways and lives under some other country now. Up top the beds fray into fine white lines where the weather has been at them. Weather has all the time there is. I like the coal best. Somewhere inside it, a leaf is still facing the sun.
The reading
Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.
- Structure
- concentric arc bands, grey outside, black band through the middle, pale inner arcs
- Movement
- one sweep from left, over the top, down to bottom right; nothing runs against it
- Coverage
- ink on about four fifths of the paper
- Tone
- five tonal steps, weighted to the middle greys
- Layering
- three kinds of pass, pale wash, banded grey, dense black; readable at left ends
- Edges
- broken split hairs at top left; crisp squared black end at centre left
- Feibai
- present in the upper grey arc's tail at top left
- Open paper
- lower left wedge of bare paper, and a low dome under the inner arcs
- Chance marks
- ink drops and spatter in the left margin; faint paper creases throughout
- Frame
- ink runs off the right edge and bottom right; left and lower left stay open
A fan of ink takes the sheet in one movement. It lifts from the left, rides the top edge and comes down hard into the bottom right corner, where it leaves the paper. Grey bands travel the outside, a black band runs through the middle, and thin pale arcs settle underneath.
The upper grey arc is the heart of it. At top left its tail splits into hairs, and the streaks of bare paper run with the stroke, still holding its line. Across the top the greys stand in clear steps, banded and streaked, because the half-raw paper keeps an edge and lets each wash rest on the one before without sinking into it. At the left the arc ends stagger, translucent, so the order of the passes reads plainly.
The black band is where the sheet pays. Inside it is one flat dark, moving only at its edges, and its squared left end stops the sweep like a cut. It covers the passes beneath and adds nothing to them. Below it, the lower left paper has no shape of its own.
Those costs are real and contained. The movement is whole, the greys are deep, and the brushwork at the top stands with the finest on any sheet.
How it was read
Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.
Three views of one sheet.
Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

5 families of tone.
Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.030 (under 0.045 reads as flat).
Five reads, agreeing on 3 of 5 qualities.
Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps. Where reads differ, they differ by one rung; close calls resolve down.
READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS
“This is a confident arc composition in the family of R3, but it has fewer passes and its dominant black band is flat inside. The sheet is sound and ordinary overall: it works without standing out.”
Arcs follow the sweep of the brush and hold their walls. The lower black band is a heavy slab, though, and its left ends are cut off bluntly.
WEAKEST Bulky dark lower arc with blunt squared left end
STRONGEST Upper grey arc's dry-brush tail, top left
The upper arcs show banding and stepped greys, with 5 tonal steps. The interior of the main dark arc is flat (modulation 0.030); tone changes only near its edges.
WEAKEST Flat interior of lower black arc
STRONGEST Banded grey upper arcs, top right
Two or three translucent arc passes stagger at the left ends and lower centre and stay legible. The dark band mostly covers what lies beneath it.
WEAKEST Dark arc covers earlier passes beneath it
STRONGEST Staggered translucent arc ends at left
A single fan sweep carries the eye from the left up and down to the bottom right. The paper under the arc is shaped, but the ink covers 84% of the sheet and the top is crowded.
WEAKEST Crowded upper half with little breathing paper
STRONGEST Sweeping arc movement left to bottom right
The ink is controlled. Small spatter drops sit on the paper at the left, away from the main masses, and paper creases show only faintly. No tide lines in the dark masses.
WEAKEST Stray drips near left arc ends
STRONGEST Dry-brush streaks in upper arc edges
3 distinct places, 0 major.
Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 3 distinct places, 11 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it.
Measured from the 16-bit master.
The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 2 principal ink masses traced (cyan), 4 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 16 edge segments, 13% crisp, 38% soft or bloomed, 50% broken.
The rating these readings produce, the rules applied and the arithmetic, with Peter's own rating where he gave one, are in the Archive record.
Date
2026.05.07, day 130 of the Crucible Year, one of 19 paintings from that date (14 shown). 16 works were registered in the fourteen days before. Paintings are dated by the day their batch was registered and photographed; each was finished that day or within the few days before. Phase: P2 The Switch (working title).
