The drop near the top is a ship. I decided this early and I am not taking it back. Below it two clamps hold a bay of white open, and the trail of droplets underneath reads as venting fuel, or a crew that left in a hurry and dropped things on the ramp. The clamps were cast in one pour each and cut square at the ends, the way colony hardware gets finished, built to hold and never to be admired. I have docked at worse stations. The bay is clean. The landing lights are smudged. Somewhere under the gap a beacon repeats the same short message, patient as a lighthouse, and the ship hangs above it with its engines ticking, deciding.

The engine's reading

The reading

Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.

Structure
two facing arcs around a white circle, open at top and bottom centre
Movement
both arcs sweep down and inward; drips and lobes fall downward at corners
Coverage
ink on about three quarters of the paper
Tone
three tonal steps, weighted dark
Layering
pale grey, mid grey and black passes, readable at outer arc edges and upper right
Edges
crisp at the squared black ends; soft at grey borders; broken at lower lobes
Feibai
present along the left arc's outer edge at upper left, and the right arc's lower sweep
Open paper
central white circle, touching the top edge, narrowing to a gap at bottom centre
Chance marks
spatter and drop trails in the central white; blots in left grey band; mottling inside right black
Frame
ink runs off left, right and both lower corners; top centre and bottom centre stay open

The eye goes to the white first. Two dark arcs, each nearly the height of the sheet, lean toward each other and leave a circle of paper open at the top, draining out through a gap at the bottom. The whole sheet turns on that hollow.

The left arc holds the most life. Its outer grey bands keep the full swing of the brush, and along the upper edge the hairs part at speed into streaks of bare paper. Half-raw bark paper lets each grey pass sit at its own depth, and at upper right a pale halo still shows behind the second arc.

The black is where it thins out. Laid last, it seals the greys beneath it, and inside both arcs it goes flat, a dark field with no movement in it. Both arcs stop in squared slabs at the gap, so they meet like two lids. The lower corners fill with heavy, dripping lobes, and blots freckle the left grey band.

The shape is sound and the open paper does real work. The sheet builds a familiar arrangement with less happening inside it, and stays a capable frame around an empty room.

Measured

How it was read

Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.

WHAT THE CODE SEES

Three views of one sheet.

Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

FIVE READS

Five reads, agreeing on 2 of 5 qualities.

Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps. Where reads differ, they differ by one rung; close calls resolve down.

READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS

“An ensō-like pair of arcs with a strong central void, but the black masses are flat inside and the stroke ends are blunt. It is cleaner than R1 but lacks R3's layered tonal depth. Overall ordinary.”

Form · BUILT

Two large arc strokes have coherent curved walls and follow the brush's travel, but both end in squared, slab-like terminals; the drippy splashes at the lower left are bulky.

WEAKEST Blunt rectangular ends of both dark arcs

STRONGEST Left arc's sweep following the brush's curve

Tonal depth · THIN

Dark interior modulation 0.038 is flat. Both black arcs are nearly uniform inside, with faint streaks only. Tone steps between the grey outer passes and the black happen at the edges.

WEAKEST Interior of the right dark arc is flat

STRONGEST Grey outer bands of the left arc

Layering · LEGIBLE

There are three tonal steps: a pale grey sweep, a mid grey and a black arc. Overlaps are readable at the outer edges of both arcs, but the black mostly covers what lies beneath.

WEAKEST Black passes cover the earlier grey ones

STRONGEST Grey stepped bands at the top right outside the arc

Composition · WORKING

Two facing arcs shape a strong white circular void with a gap at the bottom centre. The arrangement is symmetrical and somewhat static; the lower corners are busy and heavy.

WEAKEST Lower corners crowded with drippy splashes

STRONGEST Central open circle framed by the two arcs

Material and surface · SOUND

The ink is controlled. Spatter drops in the central white look intentional. Small blots sit along the left edge. The tone-stretched view shows no tide lines inside the dark masses.

WEAKEST Stray drops and spatter scattered in the white void

STRONGEST Dry-brush feathered edges at the arcs' lower ends

FLAWS

5 distinct places, 0 major.

Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 5 distinct places, 13 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it.

GEOMETRY

Measured from the 16-bit master.

The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 2 principal ink masses traced (cyan), 2 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 14 edge segments, 43% crisp, 43% soft or bloomed, 14% broken.
