The pale disc and its thin tail make a keyhole, and every dark band in the room bends toward it, the way a whole house leans toward the one door you were told not to open. In Perrault, Bluebeard's wife drops the little key on the floor of that room, and the blood on it will not come off, not with sand, not with scouring, because the key is enchanted. I picture her at the kitchen table that night, scrubbing. Two dark spots sit in the keyhole here, small and stubborn. I would leave them. The rest of the house is quiet and well built, its walls laid one over the next, and the light comes through the keyhole all the same.
The reading
Written by the engine after the painting was rated, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains the numbers; it may not change them.
- Structure
- concentric arc bands crossed by radial bars, all centred on a pale disc
- Movement
- radial pull upward to top centre; concentric arcs sweep across it
- Coverage
- ink on about nine tenths of the paper
- Tone
- three tonal steps, weighted dark
- Layering
- grey and black passes; readable on right radial bars and outer rings
- Edges
- crisp at bar and block ends; soft and streaked along lower arcs
- Feibai
- present along the lower rim of the dark arc, lower left
- Open paper
- small pale disc at top centre with narrow channel below; lower corners
- Chance marks
- two blots inside the pale disc; spatter near lower left edge
- Frame
- ink runs off top, upper left, upper right and bottom centre; lower corners open
A great fan of ink opens across the paper and narrows to one small pale disc at top centre. Every radial bar and every concentric band points there, and a thin channel of bare paper runs down from the disc into the wheel, so the eye climbs before it does anything else.
The right half is the stronger one. Grey radial bars cross the arcs in translucent passes, and on this half-sized paper each layer keeps its own edge, so the order of the build can be read from the outer rings inward. At the lower rim of the dark arc, lower left, the brush ran fast and dry: the hairs split into streaks of bare paper that follow the curve and give the darkest form a lit, travelling edge.
The cost is that dark arc itself. From upper left to centre the passes have sealed into one even black, and the paper beneath has no say. The squares at the left edge and the stacked bars at lower right are filled rather than moved through. Two blots sit inside the pale disc, at the one place the eye is sent.
The wheel turns and holds. The right side repays a long look, and the heaviest passage is also the dullest: a well-built sheet that does its main work and stops there.
How it was read
Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.8, on 2026.10.06: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.
Three views of one sheet.
Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

3 families of tone.
Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.044 (under 0.045 reads as flat).
Five reads, agreeing on 3 of 5 qualities.
Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps. Where reads differ, they differ by one rung; close calls resolve down.
READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS
“A radial arc structure like R3's, but more crowded, with a flatter dark core and stiffer blocks at the edges. The layering is legible; the dark interiors measure flat.”
The radial wedges and arc sweeps are coherent and follow the brush. The square patches at left and the stacked bottom-right bars are slab-like and stiff.
WEAKEST Blunt rectangular blocks at left edge and bottom right
STRONGEST Long radial wedge down the centre, tapering cleanly
Dark interior modulation is 0.044, under the flat threshold. The big upper-left dark mass reads as one dense tone in colour. Banding shows mainly at its edges and its lower rim.
WEAKEST Large dark arc mass, upper left to centre
STRONGEST Dry-brush arc banding at lower left of dark mass
Several translucent passes of arcs and radial bars. Their overlaps stay readable, especially on the right and lower edges, so the build-up of the form can be followed.
WEAKEST Dense dark core where passes fuse together
STRONGEST Translucent radial bars overlapping arcs on right
Strong radial movement pulls the eye toward the top-centre opening. Ink covers 90% of the sheet, so the empty paper is mostly slivers and the upper left feels heavy.
WEAKEST Crowded upper-left dark mass with little empty paper
STRONGEST Radial convergence on the pale hole at top centre
Ink handling is controlled overall. Two small dark blots sit in the top-centre opening and a few spatter dots at lower left. No tide lines inside the dark masses.
WEAKEST Ink blots inside the pale focal opening
STRONGEST Dry-brush grain at the lower rim of the arcs
4 distinct places, 0 major.
Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 4 distinct places, 13 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it.
Measured from the 16-bit master.
The previous engine (V22) measured this sheet's master file: 1 principal ink mass traced (cyan), 3 enclosed voids at true size in their grid cells (amber), the main gesture from start to end (red). Of 12 edge segments, 58% crisp, 42% soft or bloomed, 0% broken.
The rating these readings produce, the rules applied and the arithmetic, with Peter's own rating where he gave one, are in the Archive record.
Date
2026.06.14, day 168 of the Crucible Year, one of 8 paintings from that date (7 shown). 31 works were registered in the fourteen days before. Paintings are dated by the day their batch was registered and photographed; each was finished that day or within the few days before. Phase: P3 The Floor Rises (working title).
