A kingdom built downward keeps its gate at the bottom, that white arch, and the fan above it is the stair it throws open once a winter, blade by blade, for its dead queen to climb. Each step is laid over the last, and the last must stay visible, so the kingdom cannot lie about its age. I went up as far as the black speck near the middle. It is a small toad, the queen's taxman, who has waited on that step longer than the law. He asked what I was carrying. I showed him my empty hands. He stamped them anyway, and far below us the gate went on shining, small as a grain of snow.
The reading
Written by the engine after V23's reads, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains V23's numbers and may not change them.
- Structure
- concentric arc bands and overlapping blades radiating from a cropped hub; rectangular blocks at lower right
- Movement
- rotates from the hub up and right; lower-right blocks stall against it
- Coverage
- ink on about four fifths of the paper
- Tone
- three tonal steps, weighted to the middle greys
- Layering
- pale broad washes and darker grained bands; readable along upper fan, merging at lower right
- Edges
- crisp band walls and blade ends; soft overlaps within the fan; rough on palest blades
- Feibai
- none
- Open paper
- broad diagonal wedge at upper left, serrated by the fan; small white arch at bottom
- Chance marks
- fine crease lines through upper greys; small blot and pale bleached patch near centre
- Frame
- ink runs off the bottom, touches the top at one blade tip; left and right open
A great fan turns up from a small white eye at the bottom edge, its blades climbing to the right and stepping out against bare paper like a hand of cards thrown wide. The serrated rim cuts the upper left into a shape as definite as anything inked.
The long dark arc from upper centre to the right is the spine of the rotation. Its walls hold through the whole curve, and the pale outer blades swing round with it. Along the upper right, washes stack in translucent steps, each earlier pass legible through the next, because half-sized paper keeps new ink from sinking straight into the last layer. At centre left, the brush's grain survives as fine banding, giving the greys a surface to live on.
The lower right pays for all this. A blunt, rounded slab and the blocks around it close toward a single flat dark, and the turn stalls there. Fine creases, a small blot and a pale patch near the centre stay minor.
The fan still wins. Across most of its sweep this is large ink painting in full command of its greys, and one heavy corner cannot stop the wheel.
The rating
T_418, rated 7.2
The combined score, out of 10: V23's reading of the photograph as the read half and V24's twelve tests on the 16-bit file as the measured half, added and divided by 10. The scale is relative to this archive. How each half is made is on the Method page.

How it was measured
What V24 measured.
Plain physical facts with no model involved. Across the year they track how the practice changes. On one sheet they cannot say whether a mark is any good. Millimetres read a few percent high, because the photographs are cropped just inside the paper's edge.
The width of the ink mask along its medial axis.
Optical density at the 75th percentile of the sheet.
The radius of the largest circle of open paper.
How far the marks align across the sheet. Lower means they run several ways.
Left and right asymmetry of the ink. Lower is more even.
Pixels to the millimetre in the TIFF these were measured from, with the studio light removed.
Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.13, on 2026.11.03: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.
Three views of one sheet.
Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

3 families of tone.
Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.030 (under 0.045 reads as flat).
Five reads, agreeing on 4 of 5 qualities.
Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps. Where reads differ, they differ by one rung; close calls resolve down.
READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS
“A layered fan of translucent arcs turning from a cropped eye, with strong ordering and shaped paper, held back by flat darks and slab-like lower-right blocks; minor crackle and blot only.”
Left and upper arcs follow the brush's travel with holding walls, but lower-right blocks and the short dark band sit as stiff, filled rectangles.
WEAKEST Slab-like dark rectangle at lower right, bulky and unstroked
STRONGEST Concentric arc bands sweeping from the left around the eye
Arcs at centre left and the upper-right block show banding and grain, but central and lower-right darks are nearly uniform; measured modulation 0.030 confirms flat darks.
WEAKEST Flat dark central mass and lower-right block
STRONGEST Banded, grainy arcs at centre left and upper right
Many translucent passes step from pale outer bands to dark inner ones; overlaps stay readable across the fan, the sequence thickening only in the lower-right dark.
WEAKEST Lower-right overlaps closing toward one dark value
STRONGEST Translucent stepped overlaps along the upper-right fan edge
The fan turns from the cropped white eye up to the right; the serrated edge shapes the open upper-left paper, carrying the eye across despite lower-right density.
WEAKEST Crowded block stack in the lower-right corner
STRONGEST Fan rotating from the bottom-left eye against open upper-left paper
Ink is controlled with clean edges and some grain; crackle lines, a small blot at centre and a white nick are minor and do not disrupt principal darks.
WEAKEST Crackle lines and small blot within mid-grey arcs
STRONGEST Dry-brush grain in the lower-centre block and upper-right band
5 distinct places, 0 major.
Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 5 distinct places, 23 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it.
V23's rules and arithmetic, and every figure under its own name, are in the Archive record.
