The small white hole is the oldest thing in the picture. I mean that the way astronomers mean it: look through enough dark and what you finally reach is the first light, stretched thin, still arriving, barely warm. I have spent a long time at that aperture. Galaxies turn around their black centres and take their time about it. Our sun has gone round about twice since anything here had a spine, and whole mountain ranges have come up and gone to sand during a single lap. I found that restful once. Now I look at that pale dot the way a miner looks up the shaft, from very far down, with the day going cold at the top.
The reading
Written by the engine after V23's reads, from the settled findings, and checked by hand before approval. It explains V23's numbers and may not change them.
- Structure
- concentric arcs and radial spokes around a small hub, joined to stepped bars at right
- Movement
- rotation around the hub, driven rightward by a long bar; open paper runs diagonally against it
- Coverage
- ink on about nine tenths of the paper
- Tone
- four tonal steps, weighted dark
- Layering
- three kinds of pass, washes, grey bands, dark bars; readable across upper arcs and right fan
- Edges
- crisp on arcs, bars and wedges; broken at fan ends; soft inside the lower-centre black
- Feibai
- present at arc and fan stroke ends along the upper right
- Open paper
- long stepped diagonal at top right, smaller wedge at bottom left, round reserve at hub
- Chance marks
- seam in upper-left wedge; small blots on long bar; cloudy mottling in lower-centre black
- Frame
- ink runs off top, left, bottom and lower right; upper right stays open
A small white eye sits low and left of centre, and the whole sheet turns on it. Arcs ring outward in widening bands, spokes cut through them, and one long black bar drives right until the wheel breaks into stepped planes. At top right, open paper answers with a long diagonal of its own.
The finest stretch runs through the upper arcs and the right fan, where pale washes, mid-grey bands and dark bars cross and every crossing reads in order. The paper, sized with alum glue, keeps each pass sitting on the last, so the greys stack like panes of smoked glass, clean-edged, fraying into dry brush where the fan meets bare ground.
Below the eye that clarity closes. The passes fuse into near-black at bottom centre, a loose, faintly cloudy mass that sits heavy on the lower right. Elsewhere, the upper-left wedge and the long slab stay flat, filled shapes. A seam down that wedge and a few small blots on the bar barely register.
Those costs are real, and they sit low. Above them the wheel turns vast and exact, sure of every ring: a commanding sheet with a heavy foot.
The rating
T_419, rated 6.5
The combined score, out of 10: V23's reading of the photograph as the read half and V24's twelve tests on the 16-bit file as the measured half, added and divided by 10. The scale is relative to this archive. How each half is made is on the Method page.

How it was measured
What V24 measured.
Plain physical facts with no model involved. Across the year they track how the practice changes. On one sheet they cannot say whether a mark is any good. Millimetres read a few percent high, because the photographs are cropped just inside the paper's edge.
The width of the ink mask along its medial axis.
Optical density at the 75th percentile of the sheet.
The radius of the largest circle of open paper.
How far the marks align across the sheet. Lower means they run several ways.
Left and right asymmetry of the ink. Lower is more even.
Pixels to the millimetre in the TIFF these were measured from, with the studio light removed.
Read by the Visual Analysis Engine, version 23.13, on 2026.11.03: measured by code, then read 5 times by Claude Opus 5.5 against three reference paintings (R1 to R3), each read independent of the others. How the engine works.
Three views of one sheet.
Left, the photograph. Centre, the tone stretch the model is shown beside it: the darkest 45% of tones spread over the whole range, so flat black, banding and stains show. Right, every pixel as the measuring code classes it: cyan black ink, deep teal translucent grey, stone the palest ink, near black bare paper.

4 families of tone.
Every inked pixel's brightness in 64 bins, smoothed; each circled peak holds at least 4% of the ink. Life inside the black: 0.042 (under 0.045 reads as flat).
Five reads, agreeing on 4 of 5 qualities.
Each quality placed on its ladder by each read, and the mean the engine keeps. Where reads differ, they differ by one rung; close calls resolve down.
READ 1, IN ITS OWN WORDS
“Off-centre radial wheel with legible translucent layering and strong rotation out to a dissolving right fan; held back by bulky, near-flat dark wedges and a heavy lower-centre mass. Surface sound, with only minor marks.”
Arcs and spokes follow the brush's travel around the eye; walls hold, but top-left and left wedges and the long right slab remain bulky, filled shapes.
WEAKEST Bulky merged dark mass at bottom centre, loosely shaped
STRONGEST Concentric arcs and tapered radial spokes around the central eye
Arcs and right fan step richly through greys; large darks measure flat (0.042), showing only faint grain when stretched, so depth is not sheet-wide.
WEAKEST Left wedge and horizontal slab read nearly flat in colour
STRONGEST Stepped grey bands in upper arcs and right fan
Many translucent passes overlap in readable order across the upper arcs and right fan, building depth; only the heaviest darks at lower centre swallow earlier passes.
WEAKEST Passes fuse into near-black at bottom centre
STRONGEST Translucent overlapping bars and arcs across the right fan
Off-centre wheel around white eye drives rotation; long slab and fan carry the eye rightward, while the top-right paper forms a strong diagonal counter-shape. Lower centre is heavy.
WEAKEST Heavy lower-centre dark, the densest and least active area
STRONGEST Off-centre wheel spinning out to the dissolving right fan
Ink is controlled, with clean edges and dry-brush fan ends; a seam, small blots and mottling in the darks are minor, mainly visible in the stretched view.
WEAKEST Mottled, slightly cloudy interior of the bottom dark mass
STRONGEST Dry-brush stroke ends along the upper-right fan edge
3 distinct places, 0 major.
Each read must name every flaw and where it is, in a ninth of the sheet. Here the reads named flaws in 3 distinct places, 14 mentions in all across 5 reads; the number in each ninth is how many times a flaw was named there. Reads agreeing on a place strengthen the evidence for one flaw; they do not multiply it.
V23's rules and arithmetic, and every figure under its own name, are in the Archive record.
